“The well-being of every person on this planet is inextricably tied to the quality of our common life,” at first, I was very confused as to what the following sentence was saying but having spent some time thinking about it, I completely agree. This statement is saying that the personal choices we make every day impact those around us and I think this is very true. The thought of my personal choices affecting those around me is scary because I wouldn’t want to be the one to harm others. If someone had asked me this before taking Core 5, I would have most likely said no the statement above is not true. However, after hearing many lectures and doing all of the readings I can say that our choices, no matter how big or how small, can affect others in more ways than I had thought possible. Dr. Zimmer had us do an activity in lecture where we saw what the average life of an American looked like in terms of energy that was being used on a daily basis. It was very interesting to see that if everyone lived the same there would be no resources left to support everyone. When doing my own research I found that I myself was wasting too much energy and water. Making myself more aware of the energy and water I wasted inspired me to reduce my shower time as well as the energy I use throughout the day. Since then, I have unplugged many of my appliances that I typically have plugged in during the day. I have also reduced my shower time by fifteen minutes or so. I realized that my personal choices do impact others. Core 5 has opened my eyes and gotten me to see that although I am only one small person in relation to the millions of people living and the universe, my personal choices/ actions can make a
