Introduction
The introduction of immunization policy for school age children was during an introductory biology course. There, the class discussed the heard immunity effect. This effect is when a group of vaccinated individuals protects those who are not, creating a heard. The idea of the safety net only works if the majority of society continues to be vaccinated. With the non-scientific data circulating on vaccinations and its negative impacts, more and more people are choosing to not vaccinate their children at a young age. Historically, Americans were enthusiastic about vaccines (Anderson, 2015). The invention of vaccinations has been seen as the greatest public health triumph. Herd immunity is vaccine specific. For example, “the spread of mumps is prevented when vaccination rates approach 86 percent, whereas the spread of measles and pertussis requires vaccine rates as high as 95 percent” (Anderson, 2015). School immunization requirements are an effective way to create heard immunity early on (Anderson, 2015). When the children enter school they are either exempt, or enforced to receive the immunizations.
