School Shootings: The Consequences Of School Violence

School violence has become a very popular issue nowadays. From tragic school shootings to unexpected stabbings, each school’s safety is being placed in jeopardy. From Columbine High School shooting in 1999, to Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012 and the recent stabbing in April, school violence has not decreased. It is time to do something now, if further action is not taken these issues will continue. Before school violence becomes too common to students and intruders, restrictions and plans must be implemented now. School shootings have been a crime for quite some time, in the past three years they have unfortunately become a more common issue. On April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, a school shooting occurred (“Columbine”). This shooting was done by two teens who attended Columbine. The teens’ reasoning behind committing such crime is due to the fact that they were bullied by students of Columbine High School. This was a very tragic event for Columbine High School. With 13 people killed and 20 wounded, it left a mark on the community. After the two teens went about this shooting, they committed suicide. School shootings are a very serious matter, and for years following shootings like Columbine, the atmosphere of the school, as well as the community, is damaged. The Columbine High School shooting is labeled the worst shooting in United States History (“Columbine”). Schools never fully mend from tragic events like school shootings; however, there is more prevention that can be done to reduce the chances of school shootings happening. In the town of Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012, another very tragic school shooting occurred. Placing greater restrictions on those who can purchase weapons will decrease the amount of gun violence within communities, and work to keep weapons out of schools. If restrictions on gun use, as well as safety plans for schools, are not implemented now, the amount of violence will go nowhere but up. Just this year there have been 11 school shootings (“School Shootings”). By applying Obama’s plan nationwide, the amount of school violence, as well as gun violence, will be decreased. With increased security in schools, and on the streets, greater mental health care provided to students and society, as well as a greater restriction on purchasing guns, Obama’s plan is sure to keep guns out of schools as well as the hands of criminals.
