Financial support for students comes from local, state, and federal agencies. Several examples Lu shared was that quarterly the nursing hours she expends attending to special needs children are reviewed and they receive state reimbursement from Medicaid. Also, due to the number of low income students at the school, they receive money from being part of the federal food program.
Health Care Policies and Referrals
There are many services available to students through referrals that Lu mentioned. Medicaid will provide occupational or physical therapy at reduced cost or free depending on ability to pay. They will also cover vaccinations and early periodic screening for those students who qualify (Lowe, Cagginello, & Compton, 2015).

7. Provides direct care to students (Guinn-Jones, 2008, p. 1053). In observing Lu, in her current position as a school nurse, she fulfills all of these roles and so many more. As is true with any nursing position, there are many facets uncovered when exploring school nursing. The job requires problem solving skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with multiple people. There seems to be quite a bit of autonomy, yet the need to practice under the Nebraska Nurse’s Association bylaws along with state and federal regulations is critical. One example of improving student safety involves student’s progression back into sports or activities post-concussion. Bellevue follows the concussion and management protocol that was put into effect in 2012 (The Nebraska Department of Education [NDE], 2014). Her involvement in spreading the word to lay people and staff involved seminars at the high school and elementary level, as well as holding before school conferences explaining it for parents or anyone who had questions.
