My passion for school counseling began almost two years ago. While attending Widener University for my undergraduate career, I was place in a field placement at Widener Partnership Charter School during my fall semester of junior year. While there I was one of six who were implementing the EarthForce Curriculum to sixth grade students. Since there were six undergraduate students designated to this class of about twenty, our professor decided to split the class up and we would each have our own individual groups to work with. I was so thrilled and excited to have my own miniature class, however my professor had something else in mind for me. My student inspired me to be a better, stronger teacher, while I inspired him to be a more cooperative and productive student, with fewer outbursts. From that moment on, I had a new understanding of the quote “so often you find that the students you’re trying to inspire are the ones that end up inspiring you” (Junkins). I was able to break down the walls of the students and not only become an educator, but a confidant. He could tell me if he had any outbursts that day and why or what he wanted to do after school or in the future for that matter. He started the class not speaking a word to me and by the time my field experience was completed, the student was holding conversations with not only the other undergraduate students, and his classmates, but also myself. He had made a complete turn around. This still brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes, because at that very moment in time, during my last day with my student I realized how much I wanted to become a school counselor so that I could help thousands of other students just like

Social workers understand how diversity can characterize and mold someone’s experience and how it’s critical to the formation of one’s identity. The elements of diversity are acknowledged as the crossroad of various components which include; age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. Social workers appreciate that, someone’s life experiences may include ill-treatment, poverty, marginalization, and alienation as well as privilege, power, and acclaim as consequences of differences.
I come from a magnet school that is blessed to have a large number of extremely bright students that are very dedicated to their studies, a must because of the difficult curriculum involved. The community is a very strong one with many of the students going on to do great things, which has given me the inspiration to believe that I can do whatever I want in life, as I see others who are well on their way. Within this community, I have been able to form strong bonds with other students who have similar interests and ambitions. We are able to push each other to learn new things and, through a mix of competition and collaboration, are able to truly progress in many ways, pursuing excellence in both our scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. I believe this has made me a better person, inspiring me to take on a more demanding schedule and to help others when they struggle, because they help me as well. Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. I knew once I started a graduate program in School Guidance Counseling, it would be both challenging and a commitment until the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to partake; however, I am ready to accept the challenge and make the commitment. I am a newly licensed teacher and there will be areas and terminology which I am not familiar. But, what I have found out thus far is that a teacher and a student counselor have quite a few things in common. They both work with other teachers, parents, school administrators, and the community in an academic setting. The skills I have acquired as a preschool director and teacher will be integrated into my career as a guidance counselor. My interest in pursuing a doctorate degree in counseling psychology has been influenced by a combination of life experiences and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Though the path which has led me to this destination is complex, the journey has provided me with the clarity and insight necessary to understand human behavior from a holistic perspective. As I approach the completion of my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am faced with the unsettling realization that I have more questions than I do answers. This has fueled my innate desire and motivation to continue challenging myself by attaining a doctorate degree from the University of North Texas.
During my first few weeks, I met a student named Joseph. He towered over me at 6-foot-4 and weighing 300 pounds. At first, I didn't know what to expect from him.I was surprised to learn he had failed the 9th grade twice and with this being his third try he was in the same grade as his younger brother, Jason. Joe and I became friends fast. I was treated differently because of my skin color but Joe did not judge me. Through students chit-chatter, I learned Joe was very popular and on the football team but had unexpectedly quit his first year. Joe struggled with his classes especially in English and Mathematics. One day in English, another kid was struggling to read a passage aloud, the classroom was filled with snickers and the teacher made the poor kid continue. After class, Joe comforted the kid and made him smile. That was his talent,, he had the ability to make people feel better.
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.

I have seen that The Masters of School Counseling degree provides students with a chance to learn more about their inner selves and abilities. Not only will this program prepare me for life beyond the classroom, but it will also provide me with the opportunity to offer the needed support to the students with whom I will be working. When students develop a positive and trustworthy relationship with a School Counselor, there is no limit to the things that they can accomplish. School systems shouldn’t just teach content knowledge, they should also offer real world experience. Sharing simple things about our lives can be used as a tool when teaching. I feel that students can overcome obstacles they have experienced in their lives and begin to find many successes that encourage them to be the best that they can be. One of the biggest ways I think children find success is when their curiosity creates creativity “getting the wheels turning”. As I take this journey in life I have so many supporters around me that has inspired me to live up to my dreams and within my dreams make sure that its beneficial to others as well. My heart is within working with children in the areas of career development, personal or social realm, and academic success. I decided to pursue this journey to be able to watch students grow and become a reliable leader in life. I dedicate myself to making a difference in student lives. I understand counseling may be very stressful and a low rewarding job.
A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Professional counselors help to identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional or social interruptions. Counseling also improves communication, strengthens self-esteem, and promotes behavior change in relations to mental health. Counseling enables us to appreciate how we are in healthy relationships and safe environments due to some of the bad things others experience. Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. It taught me to encourage others and that positive reinforcement will always work better than punishment. It showed me that being a leader isn’t about being the person with all of the ideas or the most vocal person, but being the person that inspires others to be creative and help share their thoughts and to lead them in the right direction. Like many people, my personal experiences have shaped who I am. As a future educator, I want my students to respect me as a teacher, but understand that I will be there for every one of them, whenever they need me. I will not judge them; I will only encourage them to do their best.
