Civilization vs. savagery, and wrong vs. right plays a major role in life. Without civilization the world would be without rule and order. Civilization control humans over the natural world and over other human beings. Savagery can break the world apart and turn humans into demons and start killing each other. Throughout the novel, they change from being innocent children to utter savages. Jack wants to be in control and he does rule over his group of kids. Ralph and Jack start fighting as soon as the novel starts and their hatred towards each other intensifies as the novel progresses. Ralph and Jack both lead their own groups, with Ralph being good and Jack being bad. Ralph wants to establish a group with the qualities of democracy, while Jack is more authoritative. The remarkable way that Goulding expresses this theme shows how savagery is a result of a rule-less society. Ralph is originally excited by the fact that the group of kids will be able to live without the restrictions grown-ups put on them. Jack wants to be leader and won’t let anyone stand in his way he rules through fear and shows signs of militarism and dictatorship. He is cruel, sadistic and preoccupied with hunting and killing pigs to help the rest signal for help. His sadism only gets worse throughout the novel, and eventually turns cruelly on the other boys. Jack pretends to show an interest in the rules of order on the island, but he views the differently because they only allow him to inflict punishment. The conch shell was found in the very first pages of the novel by Ralph. After he found it, he decided to use it as a form of order and power on the island, almost like a form of government. Ralph’s leadership was determined when the group of boys had a meeting about who should lead them. In the novel, Piggy says, “We can use this to call others. Have a meeting. The boys were driven towards savagery but still had the right and conscious mind to make a reasonable choice not to commit murder.

Golding unveils the leadership characteristics that Ralph and Jack portray. Ralph has the sense of having responsibility and Jack has a sense of being a savage. Morality has imposed on children by their own society. When society is not there to guide and regulate rules to the children, they become primitive. In the beginning of the novel, these English boys come from a well-developed civilized society, and when they are taken out from their society, their animalistic instincts are divulged. The boys on the island symbolize government taking a away peace, and savagery killing logic and order. This general theme arises all throughout the novel. While they agree that the beast is not a traditional monster, it is Simon’s philosophical understanding that allows him to fully realize the meaning of the beast. At the assembly, Ralph plans to discuss the beast, hoping to bring the fear to an end. Simon suggests that the boys themselves are the beast. Later, when Simon encounters the “Lord of the Flies” in a hallucination, the reader learns the extent of his understanding. The Lord of the Flies mocks Simon by saying, “Fancy you thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill...You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you?”(128). Simon realizes that there is something within humans that can cause them to act savagely. However, at the assembly, in an effort to understand what Simon meant about the beast, the boys suggest that the beast could be a ghost.
