Joel Castro Professor Fisher English 1B 12 May 2017 Robots Taking Over Imagine living in a world where society is not experiencing life to its fullest. The truth is that we are already living in this type of the world currently. When I was younger, I went to Disneyland with my father, step-mother, and her stepson. I remember having so much fun throughout the day as my step-mother was recording lots of it. At night, there were fireworks and my step-mother decided to take out her camcorder again to record those fireworks, and I just thought to myself, “Why can’t she just enjoy the moment right now instead of recording it.” As I would watch that video at home, I would realize that it just did not have that same feeling. For example, I work at McDonald’s; in 6 months, the cashiers are going to be replaced by machines. These machines resemble self-check out machines at places like Vons, Wal-Mart, and Stater Bros. The people in these self-checks out look like robots themselves. They are just walking quietly, looking at their phone, and not socializing with human contact at all. They also argue that this will be detrimental to inflation and that prices would only higher which would affect everyone whether they went to school or not. Paying an employee at $15 an hour for a year would cost, $38,000 while buying a kiosk where customers can take their orders costs $35,000 each. This article talks about how people are going on strike because the cost of minimum wage is low. They mention how automation is the company’s response to their request. The company’s argument is that this is they do not mind replacing the workers with automation if they are demanding something that could ruin the company financially. This next article shows a solution that is used to prevent automation from continuing to affect society in a bad way. Bill Gates’s argument is that automation is moving too quickly and that it should slow down because this could get out of hand from society. Its solution is that taxing robots so that the money could be used to retrain workers and would expand education. I have always known that automation is a disadvantage for people in the long run so I do agree with what the author was writing about in this
