Salem Witch Trials of 1692-1693

This paper examines the purpose to what lead to the Salem Witch Trial, and how it affected people in those communities. The salem witch trials was a series of hearings and prosecutions of people who were accused of witchcraft. This took place in massachusetts around 1692-1693 and resulted in a total of twenty executions which mostly involved women. “ Sleep paralysis is not rare. Surveys around the world suggest that 20-45% of people experience at least one sleep paralysis episode in their lifetimes” .Some people would claim they would hear things and wouldn't have the ability to move, but these things are common with people who experience sleep paralysis. “Those affected by sleep paralysis can see and hear, because under REM sleep there is intense central nervous system activity, but they are unable to make significant movement because muscle activity is suppressed.” This was one way of looking at those accusations, but it wasn't until after the horrible events that people become coming up with “scientific” reasonings behind it.

This event also focused on another important issue, gender. Men and women were treated as equals. Women in the seventy hundreds had to present a certain kind of woman, and if she did not apply to those expectations she would be looked down upon. Women were expected to marry, and have a family. One with either of those things was suspected of being along to hide secrets from people. “Witchcraft confronts us with ideas about women, with fears about women, with the place of women in society, and with women themselves. It confronts us too with systematic violence against women.” Common women in the seventy hundredth were the most affected by the Salem Witch
