Sadism and Society In A Clockwork Orange, Alex is the main person responsible for most of the violence in his society. His crimes go from rapping to beatings, to murder. When introduced to the Ludovico treatment, later on in the story, events reveal that other members of his society are also capable of Alex’s similar behavior. People who were affected by Alex’s actions are the ones that give an understanding of how their society is. They get their vengeance later on in the story. Free Will vs. the “Clockwork Orange” Free will means the ability to do what you want when you want. Clockwork Orange refers to a person who is controlled, kind of like a robot. Alex was given a choice, if he wanted to do the Ludovico experiment for two weeks and be set free rather than being in jail for twelve more years. Of course, Alex decided to sign them and he went to the rehabilitation area for two weeks. Quote: “‘There is a form here to be signed...Will you sign?’ ‘Most certainly I will sign’, I said” (Burgess 105). 3.) The methods of the treatment to rehabilitate Alex weren’t the most appropriate ones. They made him watch film after film over and over again until Alex became “good”. They showed him these violent films so Alex could get disgusted and never think of using violence ever again. Quote: *** 4.) When Alex finished his two weeks at the rehabilitation area he got out into the free world. Alex soon meets up with Dim and Billyboy after Alex was beaten by four old men who wanted to get even with him. Dim and Billyboy where cops now, Alex was very surprised he would not believe it. Later, Dim and Billyboy take Alex to the country to beat him for revenge. All beaten and hurt, Alex seeks help. He finds the cottage with the fence with words HOME and a man who helped him, whose name is F.
