Amongst the seven sacraments, the most significant is the sacrament of matrimony. The sacrament of matrimony is defined by God’s plan for humans to establish partnerships between males and females in the form of marriage in order to serve God more fully. Through rules, rituals and symbols, the relationship between God and the sacrament of matrimony is more intimate and defined. Moreover, the rituals and symbols of matrimony further enhance man’s relationship with God. Matrimony allows people to strengthen their bond with God and each other.
The sacrament of matrimony is defined by the Catholic Church as when “a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love.” Marriage is a way of joining man and woman to serve God together. According to the dictionary, the definition of marriage is “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law or the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage.” This definition states that mutual consent is required; however, it overlooks the importance of dedication.
To be in a marriage means to be dedicated to one’s counterpart. Many believe passion is more important than dedication, but passion is just one aspect of dedication. In a relationship, passion is often felt quite early whereas dedication is built upon years of trust and love and is achieved when the two people understand and accept their partner for who they are. This reflects upon the influence of the Bible in our lives. Marriage is a sacred and the biggest commitment in life and thus is respected in both Biblical times and in our modern day society.
The sacrament of matrimony helps us make a connection to God since we understand God’s love towards us. We should love our partner the same way Christ loves the church. Therefore, a marriage is analogous to Christ’s love for the church. The relation of Christ and the church is not to be taken lightly. The sacrament of matrimony recognizes that marriage forges a deeper connection and understanding with God, hence, it has provided laws and rituals for us to abide by to ensure that a marriage can be as holy as possible ~
