Rwanda Genocide Causes

Between April and June 1994 is when the genocide started in Rwanda. Where about 800,000 Rwandan have been killed in the span of 100 days little over, three months in Rwanda and the minority of them were Tutsi. Politics, Power, and Ethnic are the cause of the genocide.

Politics was one of the causes of the genocide. “Despite the opposition forces reaching a peace agreement in 1992, political negotiations continued in attempt to achieve harmony between the Tutsis and Hutu.” (Endgenocide) The government had a peace negotiation between the Tutsis and Hutu to settle the conflict that has been going for years. So ethnic must have been one causes. “People used to be Tutsi or Hutu, depending on the proximity to the king. If you were close to the king, you owned wealth, you owned many cattle, and you are a Tutsi. If you are far away from the king, you are a cultivator, you don’t own much cattle, and you are a Hutu.” (PBS) Their king probably has a Tutsi. Because the people the king was close must have had the same ethnicity. “The Belgians, who ruled what, would later become Rwanda and Burundi, forced Hutus and Tutsis to carry ethnic identity cards. The colonial administrators further exacerbated divisions by only allowed Tutsis to attain higher education and hold positions of power.”(PBS) Because of their ethnic, the Hutu had a low status because they were Hutu. Therefore, they weren’t being treated equal and there was not anything they can never have a higher status.
