Abstract
The authors brief the readers on the history of career counseling. Career counselor’s work to provide their clients with basic hungers information, knowledge, wisdom. Individuals may have many different motivations to pursue a career power, wealth, self-satisfaction, and work fulfillment. A counselor’s aim is to accomplish goals that the client sees as important. I also would take advantage of quantitative measurements such as interest inventories and achievement profiling. Achievement profiling is done by taking a detailed look into the client’s achievement over a specific period of time and then comparing those achievements to previous goals set by the client (Brown, 2016).
Understanding the client’s cultural values and norms will help the therapist to be competent when choosing the appropriate assessment to use. The facilitation of this decision-making process, the counselor must engage in short term help to help identify immediate sources of employment and the development of employment skills (Kottler, 2002). The establishment of culturally appropriate goals and the selection of culturally appropriate interventions is very important. The counselor becomes the translator of social values, mediator, and peacemaker in result in the client and their reference group having different social values, expectations and conflict with their goals. Quantitative assessments include aptitude tests and interest inventories which are used to measure performance and interests. This type of assessment is most familiar to the clients (Brown, 2016). There are various types of inventories that can be utilized when assessing a client, these things include role play and genograms. Role play is used to help the client view that career/role from a different point of view, while genograms are used to create a correlation between careers that are occupied by other immediate and extended family members.
There are several issues associated when developing programs for postsecondary institutions. A career development specialist must determine whether to place emphasis on counseling or placement, often clients are sent out on their own to gather information, focus clients on the occupational aspects of their training. Counselors must also involve the clients’ significant others, to include parents, in the career planning process and place an emphasis on taking risks or security in the career planning process (Kottler,2002).
