Former First Lady Nancy Reagan passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Sunday. She was 94 years old. She had been a key helper, adviser, and protector of her husband, Ronald Reagan, who served as president of the United States from 1981 to 1989.

Anne Frances Robbins Davis Reagan was born in New York City in 1921. She met Ronald Reagan in 1949, when she was living in Hollywood, California, and pursuing a career in acting. “My life didn’t really begin until I met Ronnie,” she wrote in her memoirs. The two wed in 1952 and remained devoted to each other throughout their 52-year marriage. They were usually seen holding hands.

The campaign, according to Reagan, was inspired by a school visit during a trip to California. “I was talking to, I think, fifth graders, and one little girl raised her hand and said, ‘Mrs. Reagan, what do you do if somebody offers you drugs?’ And I said, ‘Well, you just say no.’ And there it was born.” Reagan’s work on the campaign is credited with helping to bring about a decrease in illegal drug use among kids.
