Thought the play, these lovers go through many obstacles that range from arranging a wedding and finding a time to meet to Juliet trying to get out of marrying Paris. The entire time fate is tossing them around. Romeo realizes this after he kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, in a brawl. At first, Romeo does not want to fight because Romeo and Juliet are already married at this time and he knows that they are cousins. Tybalt asks for a brawl from Romeo but Mercutio fights instead. Mercutio gets killed by Tybalt and that is what makes Romeo mad and fight Tybalt.

He was angry with the order from old Capulet to prevent him acting against his enemy, so sent a letter to challenge Romeo to a duel. Romeo hasn’t yet read this letter; for he was secretly marrying Juliet, the daughter of Capulet and the cousin of Tybalt. To demonstrate how this scene is exciting and dramatic, I will look at the three main characters, Mercutio, Tybalt and Romeo. One of the first characters the audience sees is Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend.
Romeo was very loyal to his friends and family, and it is possible that Mercutio thought that Romeo would help him fight off Tybalt (since he was unaware of Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage that somewhat united Romeo and Tybalt). However, this argument is easily deemed invalid. Romeo was not in the town square when the fight had first began, so Mercutio expecting his help in the fight would be a far-fetched idea. A person who is not present cannot help or hinder the situation at hand. In addition, Romeo tried to break up the fight when he said, “Gentlemen, for shame forbear this outrage! Tybalt! Mercutio! The Prince expressly hath forbid this bandying in Verona streets. Hold, Tybalt! Good Mercutio!” (Shakespeare 121). Mercutio, the joker and comic relief of the play, dies first and foremost. Tybalt spies Romeo at Lord Capulet’s extravaganza and vows to continue his fighting match by saying:
Also in the beginning of the play a fight breaks out between the Montague and Capulet families and the Prince intervenes and after telling them to drop their weapons he says “If ever you disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.” Although this rule was given Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel. Romeo kept refusing to fight Tybalt which caused Mercutio to be outraged and draw his own sword. During the duel between Tybalt and Mercutio, Romeo intervenes and tries to stop them both but Tybalt puts his sword under Romeo’s arm and kills Mercutio. Romeo then fights with Tybalt and murders him and is banished from Verona. If Tybalt hadn’t been so aggressive with the whole situation Romeo wouldn’t have been banished, and Juliet wouldn’t have needed to come up with a plan that resulted in both of their deaths.
The excerpt shows how even Mercutio recognizes the feud between the Montagues and Capulets being destructive, and how it is now gotten so out of hand he has been dragged into it. Mercutio tries to open Romeo’s eyes on how if this feud continues there will be a demise for both families; but by Romeo choosing to ignore this advice and killing Tybalt he is setting himself up for his failure/downfall. Thus, Romeo is shown as a tragic hero because his demise is partly his fault and not an accident.
Mercutio can be blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s peril because he initiated the fight with Tybalt and forced Romeo to go to the Capulet’s party. At the beginning of the play, Romeo gets invited to the Capulet’s party by a servant, unless he was a Montague. At first, Romeo did not want to go, but Mercutio eventually convinced him under the pretext that Rosaline, Romeo’s love, was going to be there. The next day, Tybalt, a Capulet, went looking for Romeo because he knew that Romeo was at the Capulet party. Instead, he stumbled upon Mercutio and Benvolio and asked them where he could find Romeo. However, Mercutio did not want to tell him and insisted on having a duel. Tybalt killed Mercutio during the fight, and Romeo kills Tybalt because he has the need to avenge his friend. In the book, ‘Romeo and Juliet”, by William Shakespeare there is a deeper meaning that Shakespeare is trying to portray other than parents cannot control their children’s hearts. He is trying to portray that a name is only a name and it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and that even with a different name that person will still be the same person they have always been. Shakespeare is using the characters: Juliet, Romeo, Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse to get this message across to the reader or the viewer.
Shakespeare sets the fight on a very hot day. This gives us passion and tiredness. Benvolio says that he and Mercutio should “retire” because “the Capels are abroad, and if we meet we shall not ‘scape a brawl” because “these hot days is the mad blood stirring”. The technique used here is dramatic irony, as the audience know that there will be a fight. There are more examples of dramatic irony in this scene. Mercutio says “we should have none shortly or one would kill the other”. The audience know that this is actually the case, that death will soon happen in the play. We also know that Romeo is now married to Juliet, and that is why he is not returning Tybalt’s banter. Romeo says “I do protest I never injured thee, but love thee better than thou canst devise till thou shalt know the reason of my love”, telling Tybalt that he loves him, but that all will become clear later. That was never his intended plan. In the first scene of act three of Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio and Tybalt have their own little conversation until Romeo appears after he was just married. Right as Romeo enters the room, Tybalt says to Mercutio, “Well peace with you, sir. Here comes my man.” (3.1.51) Tybalt and Mercutio were never intended to have a fight. In Act 1 Scene 5 when Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio sneak into Capulet’s party, Tybalt recognizes Romeo and begs Lord Capulet to kick him out. “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, / A villain that is hither come in spite / To scorn at our solemnity this night” (1. v. 69-71). Later, Tybalt sees Romeo on the street and tries to fight him, convinced that Romeo has done something to him. Romeo doesn’t want to fight, and Mercutio steps in. Romeo and Benvolio both try to stop them from fighting, which draws the conclusion of Mercutio getting stabbed. Here is a line from Mercutio right before he draws his sword to fight Tybalt in a mocking joke like manner, “Good King of Cats, but nothing of one of your nine lives. That I mean to make bold withal, and, as you shall me hereafter, dry beat the rest of your eight. Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher by his ears? Make haste, lest mine be about your ears ere it be out.” In these few lines, Mercutio tries to size down the boastful Tybalt in a manner that isn’t rude but disturbs Tybalt enough to make him want to join in on the duel. This few sentences also show again how Mercutio uses his words carefully and comical to get what he wants, which can influence how another character may
