The play is commemorated for the romantic relationship between Romeo and Juliet and the tragic events that pursued, which lead to their eventual passing. In the first place, Romeo’s name is in the title of the play, and this tale would not exist without him. This is made clear when the Prince states “For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo”. (5.3.309-310). This alludes to how Romeo’s role is so vital as he is also a Montague, who are one of the two major houses that are in the play. This is seen when Juliet asks “Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague?”(2.2.60) and it is revealed to Juliet that Romeo is a Montague, a foe of her own Capulet’s. Once Romeo slew Tybalt, the Prince banished him and the aftermath was felt throughout Verona. This is realized when the Nurse shares with Juliet that “Tybalt is gone, and Romeo is banished; Romeo that kill’d him, he is banished”. (3.2.69-70) and once Juliet hears of this she is heartbroken.
