During the play, Romeo and Juliet which is one of William Shakespeare’s most recognised tragic and romantic plays, there are two of the most clearest and dramatic themes which are demonstrated as the forefront of the themes in this play. These two themes end up threatening and killing Romeo and Juliet’s relationship, and Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare uses lots of various techniques and ways to display the themes of love and hate. Almost every person in Romeo and Juliet, has an object of desire to display love and hate at some point during the play. Romeo and Juliet’s love was destined for destruction from the opening scene of the play because of the hatred between the two families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo and Juliet both declare their devotion toward each other after Juliet urges Romeo to articulate his feelings as devotedly as possible. They both strongly regret that they are foes and resent the restrictions placed upon their relationship because of their families past. Juliet states in gloom, “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo”. This shows contrast between love and hate. Juliet refers to the indistinctness of love and also that love and hate are both intertwined into each other. She states the words “wherefore art thou Romeo” meaning why are you who you are? Why are you Romeo? Why is the only man I love, the only hate that she has for one? She displays this also by stating “my only love sprung from my only hate”. This shows that Juliet ‘s only true love (Romeo), happened to be her, and her family’s only hate. The love that Romeo and Juliet share for each other is threatened by both of their household as there is a strong line of hate between the two families. During Act 2 Scene 2 of the play, Juliet shares a comment that exposes both love and hate: “If they do see thee, they will murder thee”. She decides to see one of the two people who know of her and Romeo’s marriage, Friar Laurence, to whom she says that if she cannot find a way out of being alone she will kill herself. The Friar gives her a potion to sleep for forty-two hours and appear dead to help her. The plan is that Romeo is supposed to be there when she wakes up, but Romeo hears that she is dead and kills himself at her feet. She then awakes and kills herself as well, ending the whole brutal affair. The reader is then left to wonder if what they have just experienced is a tragedy of young love or a lesson on the power of hate, a question for which Shakespeare leaves a blurry but definite answer. After a deeper look into the text, it becomes clearly evident that hate has far more power over the characters than their “love” ever could.
