Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare shows the negative outcome of a grudge. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, both main characters, Shakespeare shows how a grudge can lead to bad outcomes in Act 5 Scene 3. In this scene, Romeo goes into the Capulets' tomb to visit Juliet for the last time. Not only does Romeo and Juliet die, but Paris and Lady Montague, two other characters, end up dying as well. Romeo and Juliet directed by Baz Luhrmann fits the purpose of this scene, but does not portray the theme best. Romeo and Juliet directed by Zeffirelli however, portrays the theme and purpose of this scene best. Therefore, Zeffirelli best portrays Shakespeare's death of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare's message is best showed in this scene. Romeo goes into the Capulet's tomb and sees Paris. He then ends up killing Paris and lays his body by the tomb. He declares his love for her then drinks the poison, kisses Juliet, and dies. Juliet then awakens and stabs herself with Romeo's dagger because of his death. Later, Montague, Prince, and Capulet end up coming. Montague declares that Lady Montague died of grief from Romeo's exile. The director in this film included lots of crosses and candles which distracts from Shakespeare's purpose. The film is also more modern than the text such as Juliet using a gun instead of a dagger to kill herself and the clothing being more modern. When Romeo went to see Juliet there were lots of crosses and candles by her grave. Romeo declares her love for her and drinks the poison. Immediately after he drinks it Juliet rises and watches him die. Juliet then takes Romeo's gun and kills herself. This film does not fit Shakespeare's purpose because it is too modern compared to the text. However, Zeffirelli uses many similarities to the text to capture the feeling of Shakespeare's true
