William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet,” is arguably the most widely known tragic love story of all time. Although it has been the subject of debate and controversy, it has inspired many love stories in recent times. One of the most controversial details of the play, are the relationships that Friar Lawrence and Nurse, have with Romeo and Juliet. Many argue that they were not being responsible with their actions regarding Romeo and Juliet’s marriage. Others say that their actions were justified, because the two teens trusted them. Nurse and Friar Lawrence did not do the “right thing” in this situation, and contributed to the events which eventually led to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Nurse betrayed the trust of both Juliet and her parents. Firstly, as an authority figure in the family, Nurse should not have arranged the meetings regarding their marriage between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a literary classic known for its tragic love story between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. In Verona, Italy, Romeo Montague has a passionate affection for a woman named Rosaline who does not return the devotion. Burdened with great sorrow, his close friends Benvolio and Mercutio convince him to go to the feast hosted by his enemies, the Capulets. There, Juliet catches the eye of Romeo, casting aside any memory of Rosaline. Eager and engrossed with thought of each other, they plan to be soon married. Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry them, and he reluctantly agrees hoping it will end the feud. Soon after the wedding between Romeo and Juliet, Romeo finds Tybalt, now his cousin, and Mercutio arguing in the streets of Verona. When Tybalt and Mercutio begin to brawl, Romeo steps between them, causing Mercutio to be struck with Tybalt's sword causing Mercutio to die. Romeo, driven with a mixture of grief and anger kills Tybalt. Shell-shocked with what he has done, he flees to Mantua, avoiding death. Meanwhile, Juliet unwillingly becomes betrothed to a respectable man named County Paris. Though Juliet does not wish to marry Paris, her father, Lord Capulet, threatens her and calls her ungrateful. Troubled, Juliet runs to Friar Lawrence for a solution to get out of the arranged marriage. Friar, then advises Juliet to tell her father that she will marry Paris. Subsequently he hands her a potion that will make her look as if she is a corpse for forty-two hours. The Nurse helps Juliet to marry Romeo because she is just thinking about Juliet’s feelings without thinking about the problems this marriage could cause. In Act I, Scene. v., lines 137-138, she tells Juliet who Romeo is. It causes Juliet to get very upset: “My only love, sprung from my only hate.'; (I.V.139), but the Nurse doesn’t think about this. She doesn’t see the trouble that has started. After the nurse realizes that Juliet and Romeo love each other, she doesn’t stop it; instead, she agrees to carry the message to Romeo, although she knows Romeo is a Montague. After the Nurse has a secret meeting with Romeo, she teases Juliet and praises Romeo as a handsome and nice young man. She does not explain to Juliet the problems of loving Romeo. She helps and encourages Juliet to get to Friar Laurence’s cell to get married. The Nurse doesn’t consider the dangerous result of this action. She only thinks of the moment.

The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.

On the night that Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love, Romeo goes to Juliet’s house and talks to her in private. They fall in love even more, and Romeo decides that he wants to get married to Juliet. Juliet hesitates slightly, saying that this was all happening too fast, so she decides to send her Nurse tomorrow to make sure that Romeo’s words were true: “. . . Pray you, sir, a word; and, / as I told you, my young lady bid me enquire you out” (Shakespeare 2.4.149-150). Juliet’s parents would never help out as much as the Nurse. They would never have gone to Juliet’s lover and tried to figure out if his words were true or false. That is why the Nurse is more of a parent to Juliet than her actual parents. Juliet can count on her to do anything for her. Lastly, the Nurse shows how much she cares for Juliet during the Tybalt-Romeo dilemma.
