Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, The Hunger Games, and The Outsiders are three books that would be in my personal library. Each of these books has a lead character - Cassie Logan, Katniss Everdeen, and Ponyboy Curtis – who is an underdog that fights for justice.
In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, the main character Cassie Logan, a young African-American girl, grows up experiencing racism in the American South. Even though she was only nine, she fought for equality and justice for herself and her family. Her father left Anne and Anne’s mother when she was young for another woman. Anne’s mother was a strong independent woman that she look up to. During one summer, Anne help her mother and her step father in the plantation. The temperature was so hot, Anne decided not to become a farmer like her mother and father and wanted to get out of black poverty system (Chapter 8). When she was eighth grade, she help the school fundraised money. That was the first experience on organizing people to work together. She would start use that skill she learned later on during the political movement. Before entering the high school, one of her classmate was murdered by white lynching mob. Anne was angry at other African americans for not standing for himself and allow himself to be kill and push around. “I hated them(other African-American people) for not standing up and doing something about the murders. In fact, I think I had a stronger resentment toward Negroes for letting the whites kill them than toward the whites” (Chapter 11). Anne is really upset and she wanted the situation to change.When anne was young, she was not allow to sit with her white friends when they go to movies. Anne Moody’s memoir, Coming of Age in Mississippi, is an influential insight into the existence of a young girl growing up in the South during the Civil-Rights Movement. Moody’s book records her coming of age as a woman, and possibly more significantly, it chronicles her coming of age as a politically active Negro woman. She is faced with countless problems dealing with the racism and threat of the South as a poor African American female. Her childhood and early years in school set up groundwork for her racial consciousness. Moody assembled that foundation as she went to college and scatter the seeds of political activism. During her later years in college, Moody became active in numerous organizations devoted to creating changes to the civil rights of her people. These actions ultimately led to her disillusionment with the success of the movement, despite her constant action. These factors have contributed in shaping her attitude towards race and her skepticism about fundamental change in society.
As presented in many fictional text such as Kindred, Wild Seed and The Appropropriation of a Culture “control” or “power” can be deemed the underlying influence to the concept of oppression and unjust treatment of others due to their race or social status. These fictional texts graphically detail the experiences of African Americans and how they came together as a community when facing the inevitable both in slavery and during the Jim Crow era. There are many other texts that describe the improper regulation of control and what can happen when one race or group has too much. One novel entitled Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston tells the story of a wife who was sentenced to prison after shooting her husband in self-defense after he had contracted rabies and turned violent. Another novel entitled Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Throughout American history, African Americans faced the cruel and harsh reality of slavery and racism. In the American South in the 1930s, African Americans were discriminated against and seen as inferior to whites. This racism, discrimination and segregation is a social norm in the American South in Mildred D. Taylor’s novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Taylor uses the symbolism of certain vehicles, a fig tree and the Logan land to depict the severity of racism and the condition of southern society in the 1930s.
Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. & nbsp; An important idea in the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" written by Mildred D Taylor is racism.  ; This idea is important because it tells us how life was in the 1930s for a little black girl who matures with racial conflict around her. & nbsp; "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" is about a young, black girl, Cassie Logan, who tries to understand with her family, why the blacks are different to the whites. Cassie, the narrator, leads us through all the disaster and trouble that her and her family have been through in relation to the white folks in Mississippi. & nbsp; The first example that shows racial conflict between the blacks and whites is the Jefferson Davis School bus, which is full of white children. Blacks do not have a bus so Cassie and her brothers have to walk to school. However, each morning the children would be threatened by this bus, "a bus bore down on him spewing clouds of red dust like a huge yellow dragon breathing fire". This is surely because of racism. The whites in the bus seem to find it amusing with "laughing with faces" to see the black children run for their lives. & nbsp; Another example is the incident Cassie takes a trip to Strawberry to the market. There she is made to apologize to Lillian Jean Simms (a white girl) for bumping into her. Cassie does not like to get pushed around and she stands up for herself. She says, "I ain't nasty, and if you're so afraid of getting bumped, walk down there yourself" to Lillian Jean after she is told to "get down in the road".&nbs would do what they are told, but Cassie is strong and stubborn, and she refuses until her Big Ma tells her to apologize. & nbsp; Overall, life in the 1930s for the black people was very difficult as they were pressured and pushed around as if they were animals. With the temper, that Cassie has, she finds life unfair and still does not seem to understand "the way of things" between the black and white people until T.J (a black boy whom she does not like but was her brother's best friend) is going to be hanged for a crime he did not commit. Even though Cassie has now matured, she will still stay strong & nbsp;
When Anne first began to realize how the white people really treated the blacks, she had a sense of hopelessness, and anger. But she came to understand that it's not hopeless, and no matter what challenges she was facing within herself, her mother or with the outside world that civil rights for all, was worth the fight. She overcame natural obstacles that all teenagers face as well as ones that were racial motivated. "That summer I could feel myself beginning to change. For the first time I began to think something would be done about whites killing, beating, and misusing Negroes. I knew I was going to be apart of whatever happened."4

Courage is when you show very brave actions, and don´t let anyone get in your way.In Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry the author Mildred Taylor introduce a very sassy and courageous character named Cassie Logan. She has to stand up for her family throughout the book. Cassie is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even if it might get her in trouble. Cassie proves she has courage when she stands up for Little Man at school, when she is at the Barnett store, and she is willing to stand up for T.J even though his mean actions against her family.Cassie is a very sassy and outspoken girl who stands up for what she believes in. She is not afraid to fight for what is right. She loves and her family more than anything, and she is not afraid to stand up for them. Cassie is very courageous, and she knows what is right from wrong.
In the book Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, the author describes what her reactions and feelings are to the racial hatred and discrimination she and eight other African-American teenagers received in Little Rock, Arkansas during the desegregation period in 1957. She tells the story of the nine students from the time she turned sixteen years old and began keeping a diary until her final days at Central High School in Little Rock. The story begins by Melba talking about the anger, hatred, and sadness that is brought up upon her first return to Central High for a reunion with her eight other classmates. As she walks through the halls and rooms of the old school, she recalls the horrible acts of violence that were committed by the white students against her and her friends.
People sometimes read stories and poems for entertainment, but they also read them because they can relate to them in some way. Racism affects many people's lives. They are stereotyped, there are hate crimes, and bullying because of racism. Both “The Wife’s Story” by Shirley Jackson and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou teach about the topic that racism destroys lives.
I was late for school, and my father had to walk me in to class so that my teacher would know the reason for my tardiness. My dad opened the door to my classroom, and there was a hush of silence. Everyone's eyes were fixed on my father and me. He told the teacher why I was late, gave me a kiss goodbye and left for work. As I sat down at my seat, all of my so-called friends called me names and teased me. The students teased me not because I was late, but because my father was black. They were too young to understand. All of this time, they thought that I was white, because I had fare skin like them, therefore I had to be white. Growing up having a white mother and a black father was tough. To some people, being black and white is a contradiction in itself. People thought that I had to be one or the other, but not both. I thought that I was fine the way I was. But like myself, Shelby Steele was stuck in between two opposite forces of his double bind. He was black and middle class, both having significant roles in his life. "Race, he insisted, blurred class distinctions among blacks. If you were black, you were just black and that was that" (Steele 211).
Thanks to her good grades, Ruby is chosen to be a pioneer in breaking down the walls of segregation. Through her entire first school year with white children, this brave little black girl is escorted by four federal marshals through a crowd of angry white protestors in front of the school. Miss Henry, Ruby’s teacher from Boston, works with Ruby since none of the regular teachers will have anything to do with her. Through the hard work of the people who told Ruby to attend the white school and through the determination of Ruby, Miss Henry, and Mr. and Mrs. Bridges, Ruby overcame discrimination, racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and educational equalities.
Racism was everywhere and it wasn’t just the adults who saw it, or felt it, but young children as well. I thought everyone was created equal. That we weren't all that different. That no one was judged. I thought I was right, but I realize I couldn't have been more wrong. I was born the daughter of Presbyterian missionaries. In America specifically, African Americans endured racism heavily, especially in the South, and did not gain equal rights until the 1960s. In her renowned book The Color Purple, Alice Walker narrates the journey of an African American woman, Celie Johnson (Harris), who experiences racism, sexism, and enduring hardships throughout the course of her life; nonetheless, through the help of friends and family, she is able to overcome her obstacles and grow into a stronger, more self-assured individual. While there are numerous themes transpiring throughout the course of the novel, the symbolism is one of the strongest prospects for instigating the plot. In The Color Purple by Alice Walker, numerous symbols influence and drive the plot of the novel.
Her mother was a church-going woman and sang in the choir. Her mother didn’t work; she just stayed home and took care of the family. By being black, her parents faced lots of racism living in the south (1). Both of her parents had moved from the south to escape the racism and to find better opportunities.
