You think you know rock and roll? Think again. Today I am going to tell you about the history of rock music, why it’s a popular genre, and how the Vietnam War changed rock music.
Rock and roll has been around since the mid-1950s. Rock and roll has changed dramatically over the years. Some of the first rock and roll singers were Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, etc. During the years of transition during the late fifties and early sixties, music has dramatically changed over the years. From Motown music to hard rock to heavy metal, rock and roll became the most popular genre of music.

Rock music become more progressive and went from hard rock, to progressive rock, to heavy metal. Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Saturday Night Fever, Bruce Springsteen, and The Sex Pistols were the most popular during the 70’s. Led Zeppelin was an English heavy metal band formed in London, England in 1968. Led Zeppelin consisted of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham.
Heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. were very popular due to their music and influences. In the 1980s, bands like Iron Maiden and Motorhead from England were a huge hit on the rock charts. Iron Maiden is well known for their single, The Trooper, while Motorhead was known for their hit single, The Ace of Spades.
However, heavy metal stars like Marilyn Manson and Black Sabbath have been accused of worshipping the devil and cause teens to commit homicide and/or suicide. Despite that they have denied these theories, rumors are still being passed on mouth-to-mouth.
In the 1980’s, CD’s, Synths, and MTV rose to the public. Basic rock became a more popular genre of rock and roll in the 1980’s. U2, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Run DMC, and Prince.
