Life will throw even the most successful people challenges that they cannot avoid but the outcome of those situations always lies firmly in the hands of the people involved. Figures from the past have shown this to be true. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Gandhi, etc. are inspirational people who have taken unfortunate circumstances and have changed them into opportunities--into unarticulated examples of accomplishments that have changed the society’s views on the benefits of always striving for something better. Robert Frost was one of those people; he was able to optimize the most out of terrible situations, and was able to explain the lessons he learned through poetry, expressing how life is a never-ending learning process. However, some couples don’t take marriage seriously, and avoid using Robert Frost’s words as a legitimate guideline when making that huge decision. Marriage is to be viewed as an honor, a struggle, a joyous occasion, and simply, a roller coaster. A roller coaster that peaks at certain times in one’s life, and then crashes instantaneously, the next. The commitment of the “marriage ride” is what makes people persevere through the whole process. Commitment means putting the significant other before himself/herself and to listen to the decision that the other person makes before taking in his/her own decision (1). Along with commitment comes perseverance, the attitude of determination to not give up when a situation becomes challenging. In marriage, many situations arise that require an immense amount of labor to fix or to endure through. However, enduring those challenges doesn’t mean to lose oneself, but to embrace the individuality that he/she holds, standing up for one’s beliefs (3,8,9,10,13). By avoiding to polarize the belief that one has, the individual can move past the rudimentary problems and can optimize the best out of the situation, which is what Robert Frost is trying to relay. He maximized his abilities to the fullest potential and did everything in his power to make any problem better. He expanded beyond the parameters he faced and provided the most positive outcome. People who are getting married or are already married need to look at Robert Frost as an idol, and should apply his words to the issues that they face everyday as married couples. They need to quit dissipating over small issues and need to look at the positive side of those stressful occasions.
