Robert E. Lee was a general during the civil war and was born in Stratford, Virginia in 1807. His father was a revolutionary war general Henry Lee. He graduated from the military academy at west point in 1829. He ranked second in his class. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in engineers. He became war general for the confederate army in 1861. He served in the mexican war under the command of general wool. He was ranked captain in chief engineer during the war. Lee was breveted three times during the war. His last time being breveted during the mexican war was during the battle of veracruz as a colonel. Lee an amazing strategist and war general. He was assigned commander-in-chief in 1861 as he was repairing to Richmond, Virginia. He was later appointed war general that year. During the first months of the war, he fought in western Virginia. He was later sent to eastern South Carolina to fight in the civil war. In March 1862 he was assigned to duty under the command president Abraham Lincoln.
Some of Lee’s extended family served in the virginia government. His father, Henry Lee, served as virginia’s governor. When Robert Lee was 18, he went and enrolled at west point military academy. He finally graduated with perfect scored studies in artillery, infantry and cavalry. He got out of the west point military academy in 1829. Robert married a woman named Mary Custis in 1831. She was the great granddaughter of George Washington’s wife, Martha Washington. He and Mary Custis later had seven children, four daughters and three sons. Custis, Rooney and Rob were the names of their sons. Their daughter’s names were Annie, Mary, Agnes and Mildred. His children were scattered over america and london when the Civil War first started in 1861. None of them had died before he had in 1870.

During the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant played a major role in the Union’s victory. He did this by: Winning multiple battles, his expertise as a leader, and defeating Robert E. Lee. Grant started his career as an officer by going through the military academy called WestPoint. After graduating as a Second Lieutenant, he made his way through the ranks in the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, he was promoted to Brigadier General, Major General and then to Lieutenant General by President Abraham Lincoln.

One of the best commanders in the Confederate army was Lee still; the Union stood at a better standpoint during the battle. “Perhaps the most significant lesson from July 3, 1863, concerns the method of decision-making. Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia. Lee was the fourth child of General Henry Lee III, Governor of Virginia, and his mother, Anne Hill Carter, Lee was raised by his mother who taught him about authority, tolerance, and order. Lee was exposed to Christianity at an early age and devoted his life to god. In 1825, Lee was accepted into West Point. There he learned about warfare and how to fight. In 1829, Lee graduated 2nd of 46 in his class, but even more surprising is that he didn’t get a single demerit while attending West Point. Afterward, Lee was appointed as Superintendent of West Point from 1852 to 1855. After he served his term, Lee left West Point to become a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Cavalry of Texas.

James Monroe was born on April 28,1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, at this time Virginia was a British colony. He was the oldest son of five children, one sister and three brothers. They were the children of Elizabeth Jones Monroe and Spence Monroe. Spence Monroe was a farmer and a carpenter. When James was eleven he started to attend Campbelltown Academy. George Brinton McClellan was a Union general during the Civil War. He was born December 3, 1826 in Philadelphia, PA. He was also commander of the Army of the Potomac twice, which was the Union’s largest army. He fought as the General-in-Chief of the Union army until 1862, when he was removed by Abraham Lincoln, who thought he was a coward. This was because although he had many more men in his army, he often thought that he was outnumbered. This is a reason why Lincoln fired him. McClellan was a meticulous organizer and was very cautious about his war strategies.
It was once stated that, "there can be no greater error committed, than for the leaders of a revolution to select for military commanders, those whose tastes and habits are formed under an entirely different organization of things,"(Headley 157). General Lee, became the perfect example of this. Born in 1732 and raised in England, Lee was fourteen when he became part of his father's regiment, the 55th foot. In 1754, Lee joined the 44th regiment and went to America to fight in the French and Indian War. During the time he was there he befriended the Seneca Indians and was given the name Ounewaterika, or "boiling water," due to his temperament. By the age of 27, Lee had been promoted major of the 103rd regiment. However, in 1772, Lee left Britain, accusing George III of destroying the liberty of Englishmen, and journeyed to start a new life in America.
He was not "dignified" in the way that General Lee was, though rough and ready, he was always a gentleman, in the best meaning of the word. He was proud of his soldiers and his work, and ambitious to do his utmost for his country. He had so great a faith in the Union cause that he never for a moment lost hope that in the end it would succeed.
Lee is an excellent general for our newly created Confederacy. He is not only a national hero and in a very positive public light, he is also brilliant and valiant, knowing when to strict vital blows on the enemy. Even considering Lee’s weaknesses, he is still the General we need to lead the Confederacy to victory.

Both sides needed to find men of outstanding character in order to succeed in their war efforts. Robert E. Lee showed himself as exactly such a man. President Abraham Lincoln agreed and sought out Lee, an accomplished U.S. military veteran with 32 years of service, to lead the Union troops. Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, knew Lee lived in Virginia, a state that had succeeded from the Union. Davis wanted Lee to command the Confederate Army. Ultimately, Robert E. Lee, a man of great character who valued relationships as the crucial element in leadership, honored those around him and displayed
