Robert E. Lee was a general during the civil war and was born in Stratford, Virginia in 1807. His father was a revolutionary war general Henry Lee. He graduated from the military academy at west point in 1829. He ranked second in his class. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in engineers. He became war general for the confederate army in 1861. He served in the mexican war under the command of general wool. He was ranked captain in chief engineer during the war. Lee was breveted three times during the war. His last time being breveted during the mexican war was during the battle of veracruz as a colonel. Lee an amazing strategist and war general. He was assigned commander-in-chief in 1861 as he was repairing to Richmond, Virginia. He was later appointed war general that year. During the first months of the war, he fought in western Virginia. He was later sent to eastern South Carolina to fight in the civil war. In March 1862 he was assigned to duty under the command president Abraham Lincoln.

Some of Lee’s extended family served in the virginia government. His father, Henry Lee, served as virginia’s governor. When Robert Lee was 18, he went and enrolled at west point military academy. He finally graduated with perfect scored studies in artillery, infantry and cavalry. He got out of the west point military academy in 1829. Robert married a woman named Mary Custis in 1831. She was the great granddaughter of George Washington’s wife, Martha Washington. He and Mary Custis later had seven children, four daughters and three sons. Custis, Rooney and Rob were the names of their sons. Their daughter’s names were Annie, Mary, Agnes and Mildred. His children were scattered over america and london when the Civil War first started in 1861. None of them had died before he had in 1870.
