In the Rio Grande Valley littering is a big issue when it comes to animals and their habitats. Many individuals tend to throw trash on the streets and oceans when they go to beaches, for example South Padre Island. When people go on vacations, they always leave their trash on the sandy beaches and do not pick it up. This kind of action result in a bird confusing the plastic garbage for food and consuming it. Garbage is very dangerous for animals it can injure them and damage their digestive system which can sometimes result in death. The first think that I see when I walk outside everyday is the layer of haze that looms across the Wasatch Front. It doesn’t surprise me that The American Lung Association gave Salt Lake City an F, on our “State of the Air” report card. (American Lung Association,2013).What companies are the biggest contributor to our pollution? Should our children suffer the consequences of pollution? There are many causes and effects of pollution along the Wasatch Front, which includes large industrial companies, commercial companies and household pollution.
Ever since I was a little kid I loved the performing arts and I never thought that I would eventually fall in love with science . After an intense and challenging year of Chemistry my sophomore year, I was hesitant and nervous in signing up for my junior year science class. Toward the end of my sophomore year my chemistry teacher, Mr. Bowditch, told me he thought I would do well in Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I was in a state of disbelief because I was struggling trying to get a C in Chemistry and I was thinking how was I supposed to take AP Environmental Science class. After a conversation with my parents, they had persuaded me to sign up and we agreed if i didn't like it or it was too hard I would be able to drop the class.
The video MIDWAY a message from the Gyre: a short film by Chris Jordan gave me the chills and ultimately upset me. In the beginning of the short film the diretor shows us a glimpse of the seagulls that inhibit Midway Island, North Pacific Ocean, an Island that is more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent. Jordan includes a clip of a mother gull feeding her baby gull before showing us snapshots of dead gulls with trash and plastic in their bodies. When i first saw these pictures I honestly thought that the photogragher arranged random pieces of plastic found on the isand into a dead seagull’s body. After the snapshots the director included a video of the photographer cutting open in a seagull’s body and taking random objects and pieces of plastic out. When I saw this my heart broke, I was in disgust and mad at us humans. The poor birds dying shown in the following clips were also very sad and graphic. These innocent birds are consumming

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest garbage dump in the world. According to estimates made by experts, the patch holds approximately three and a half million tons of garbage. Majority of this garbage is made of plastic. This waste is a threatening problem to the patch’s surrounding wildlife. Many animals are caught in the floating pieces of trash and it is the cause of the deaths of about one million birds and about one hundred thousand other sea animals. Due to the oceans nature and constant moving currents, the trash is also constantly moving. Therefore the size of the patch never stays the exact same. However, scientists believe it be approximately two times the size of Texas. The plastic is mostly broken down from larger materials into small pieces. The patch has been referred to as one scientist as a, “plastic soup”. This garbage poses such a threat mainly because it does not biodegrade. These plastics will be in the ocean essentially forever. Many plastics also contain chemicals, and absorb other chemicals and pollutants they become exposed to. These newly absorbed toxins are then leaked and distributed back into the ocean over time. The chemicals can directly enter the bodies of the animals which consume them. A study was being conducted by scientists of the fish that inhabit the area around the patch. What the researchers found inside the belly of one fish (that was no larger in size than that of a finger), was eighty four small fragments of plastic. I will present information from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution District and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to provide details on the high levels of pollutants in the Central Valley and possible causes. After which, I will discuss ways I, and others, can improve the air around us and protect our health.

We always hear "do not litter!" or "throw your litter in the bins", maybe some of you bored to hear that yet we still do not throw it in the correct place. Litter is a serious habit problem to just throw away objects on the ground or leave them lying on the ground, instead of putting them in the garbage can. In Indonesia, the amount of litter is 175.000 ton/day and this is increasing every day. But we don't have to see that far, just look around us, our campus, Sanata Dharma University is still facing the littering problems. Each day, although there are various spots of bins and it is never full yet there are many litters lying in the floor, you can see the student hall as the evidence that even though it has 10 spots of bins, we still find people throwing their litter everywhere.
In 2014, the number of tickets handed out by City of Toronto officials for littering was zero, despite the fact that the City of Toronto has a bylaw that bans littering across the city. As a Torontonian, I have seen countless signs in public places, such as parks and along major roadways, that state that littering is not allowed, and a hefty fine is associated with it. For what seems like such a trivial task, though, there are always cigarette butts or coffee cups, among many other articles, that lie discarded on the ground as a result of people who did not take it upon themselves to dispose of their trash properly. This is an example showing how, even with laws that prohibit the act of littering, it remains a prominent issue that we must face.
The increase in trash is due to population growth and consumerism. Food is a major factor to landfill waste. Up to 40 percent of food produced in the United States is trashed each year, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Household pollutants also contaminate and persist in the environment.
Have you ever drunk a plastic water bottle and threw it down. Instead why not find a recycling bin and put the bottle in a bin. This will help because some animal might try to eat the bottle and die. If you see a bottle on the ground find a recycling ben. This is one way recycling is helpful, it conserves wildlife.
I’ve lived in many communities growing up and I have noticed that littering has been a big issue starting with kids that don’t know what they’re doing to parents who allow it. It is not only unattractive, but it ruins the environment. I use to live by a beach and noticed it can lead to water pollution. Also, the animals in the wildlife can be negatively affected. People do not want to live in a dirty areas because it doesn't look good.
Although plastic bags appear to be fragile and light, their negative environmental effect is devastating. Plastic bags may cause large amounts of pollution in every step of their limited life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials, production, transportation, and recycling or disposal. Plastic bags can be defined as the most damaging form of environmental pollution. They can have a damaging effect on marine animals and wildlife in addition to the aesthetic effects on beaches, parks, and trees. Plastic bags are potentially one of the main causes of death to marine animals (Harbor keepers,2008). Up to one hundred thousand marine animals or more die each year from eating plastic bags which are mistaken for food. This can result in blocking the animal’s intestines and possibly lead to the animal’s death. Another possible situation is that wildlife, such as birds, can get tangled in plastic bags causing choking and immobility, which may eventually lead to death. (Senior, 2008) and (Citizen Campaign, 2010). In other situations, after plastic bags photo degrade they remain toxic and could be eaten by fish, shellfish or any other marine life and survive this allows the toxins to enter our food chain through bioaccumulation (Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, 2011).
