Education is a fundamental human right that allows for individual development. The right to education is internationally stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights created by the United Nations. For many privileged countries, the issue of education is non-existent, and all children are able to safely attend school and learn. This being said, children in many impoverished countries still struggle with being able to attend school as well as having their right forcibly denied. This struggle to receive education has manifested due to violent conflicts, poverty, and unjust governments denying children from their humane right to knowledge. In many impoverished countries, students are being driven away from their schools by violence and fear. In Sudan, an abundance of schools were destroyed during their second civil war. In other cases there is a much heavier degree of fear. Many schools and students have become direct targets, like in Afghanistan, where “the Taliban deliberately bombed a primary school because girls were allowed to attend” (The right to Education and its Denial in Conflict Situations). As a result, many students, especially girls, avoid school and fall behind. Even worse yet, schools can be used as military recruiting sites, causing even more unsafe conditions. “In Sri Lanka, in addition to using schools as a recruitment base, the Tamil Tigers also recruited students on their way to and from school as child soldiers” (The Right to Education and its Denial in Conflict Situations). Students may want to learn and gain an education, but they are unable to overcome the violence and conflict. School is supposed to be a happy and safe environment that allows students to grow and learn. Education is able to beat poverty as well as increase the economic structure of a country. Having educated citizens would increase a country in every way, so they should want. Education needs to be a top global priority and efforts and funds need to be contributed in order to make a difference. Education is a necessity in the lives of all citizens. Education can beat poverty, as “one extra year of schooling increases a person’s earnings by up to 10%.” Through this “171 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills” (Education for All). Education also reduces child mortality. A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past age five.
