Imagery provides a visual perception to what the author is describing. There are examples of imagery in both of these literary works, “Richard Cory,” by Edwin Arlington Robinson and “The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin. Imagery is an important part of the meaning of both of these literary works. The imagery shown in “The Story of an Hour” has a deeper meaning than “Richard Cory.”
The imagery in both is significant and detailed. In the poem “Richard Cory” imagery is used in describing the way Richard Cory looked and walked around town. He was an elegant man admired by the rest of the town. Throughout the poem, the author uses imagery to show his wealth, “We people on the pavement looked at him” this suggest that he is of a higher class that the people are looking up to him from below, how the pavement fall beneath our feet (Robinson 533). Without the use of imagery, the literary works would not be as attention grabbing as they are. Literary devices help the flow of the stories and it helps keep the reader hooked. In “Richard Cory” the imagery helped the ending become a surprise, after being describe how he was we did not expect his death. In “The Story of an Hour” the imagery also helps the ending, we get to see and feel her freedom to later be shocked that she dies of a heart attack after finding out that her husband was not dead.
Both literary works have deadly endings, the imagery leads to the protagonist death. Imagery helps us put a short movie together of the events that are happening, in this case we get to see Mrs. Mallard’s emotions and the characteristics of Richard Cory from the point of view of the town. Imagery is among the many other literary devices used in both of these literary works. The literary works also show a bit irony specially with their endings.
