The Breaking Bad television series has been memorable to viewers due to its diverse plot and stirring scenes. Vince Gillian incorporated Scholes matrices of power into his piece. Rhetoric has played an important roll in Breaking Bad, pathos, ethos, and logos have brought this film to another level. Allowing a sense of emotion, logic and credibility, within each episode. The series has been culturally relatable to viewers and the visually fascinating. Through narrativity the series has offered us intense plot lines and climaxes that are hard for viewers to resist and keep people watching. Through rhetoric analysis you are able to see the significance of Scholes matrices of power in Vince Gillian’s film, Breaking Bad.

Rhetoric is used through visual fascination, Breaking Bad amplifies the scenes with visuals that drawn in the audience and keep them questioning this “…is just one of the matrices of power and pleasure that [is] organized by video texts.”(Scholes) After Walter cancer diagnosis, the colors that he wears in the show become stronger and eventually go black when he begins to recover. After the cancer returns or when he’s defeated, the drab khaki returns. In the opening seasons Hank is seen in orange, with tints of yellow and peach. But when he suffers through traumatic events, his colors turn a deep brown. After fighting with family due dishonesty, he slowly gains tints of orange and brighter color back after he re-involves himself with the Heisenberg case. One trademark in the show that's conspicuous is that you don't often see the faces of the main characters. Other networks or studios would be upset if you put your main character in a silhouette or put a little bit of light on his head. Breaking Bad always head towards the emotion of the scene and not necessarily towards seeing the faces. The way they create visual fascination is very expressionistic and intriguing to the viewer. An example by Scholes is, “…the process through which video texts confirm viewers in their ideological positions and reassure them as to their membership in a collective cultural body.”(Scholes) Breaking Bad successfully relates the story people’s lives allowing them to connect with the story. Dishonesty is a component that reoccurs in breaking bad. Continues white lies that turn into a major lies is the dishonesty that we see throughout the t-v series. Every lie that Walt creates begins with him lying to Skylar or Walt Jr. about his current whereabouts. The lie then turns into a made up reason for why Walt did not come home last night. Love has played both a negative and positive roll in Breaking Bad. Jesse falls in love with a girl that he ironically met in the business. Walt also shows the love that grows from partnership to Jesse, he fathers him about his addiction to meth. He gets mad and worries greatly about Jesse’s health. Jesse however falls in love with Jane Margolis who also shares an addiction with him. Jesse does not have many loved ones in his life due to him being a “burn out” stereotypically speaking. Jane eventually passes away from chocking on her own throw up that on a side note Walt had witnessed.
