This week’s reading had so many definitions to memorize. Although, it was interesting to learn about Euphemism and how it is suppose to be intended to spread positive attitude. Just by changing a few words can make the whole expression have a completely different outcome. For example, rather than saying a person has died, you can say departed to make the situation appear better. We use rhetorical devices like Euphemism, to make everything have positive results. While dysphemism is the complete opposite, it’s purposely used to produce a negative effect on someone’s attitude. Chapter four provided many rhetorical devices, which will help in writing better. Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
Heinrichs had previously worked as a journalist before becoming a full time writer and advocate for rhetoric. He utilizes illustrative examples to convey rhetorical concepts. Furthermore, chapter four reveals the most valuable logos and pathos tactic. Lastly, this book’s use should be continued in this course.
An article that uses a lot of rhetorical devices is Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott. The speaker of this article is obviously Anne Lamott; the reader gets to understand her more after she shares some personal experiences. Lamott wants people to know that their first drafts are supposed to be shitty. This article is meant for college students who just finished their first draft and is looking for improvement. The essays of Carr and boyd are all structured fairly similarly. The author explains the problem and then describes the effects the problem results in, also known as the cause and effect organizational strategy (“Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies”). There are many reasons why people use euphemism as mentioned by William Lutz in “The world of Doublespeak” states that “euphemism is an inoffensive or positive word or phrase used to avoid the harsh, unpleasant, or distasteful reality” (390). However as mentioned by Lutz in “The world of doublespeak” when a euphemism is used to mislead or deceive, it becomes doublespeak” (391). For example instead of saying we killed three people they would use the phrase we exterminated three intruders to mislead and confuse people especially the uneducated. Also as stated by William Lutz in “The World of Doublespeak” indicates that “when you use a euphemism because of your sensitivity for someone’s feelings or for a recognized social or cultural taboo, it is not doublespeak” (390). For instance, imagine someone told you I heard your grandpa died that would sound harsh, but if someone said I heard your grandpa passed away that sounds more respectable which is not considered doublespeak. Lutz finds the People who are responsible for euphemism doublespeak tend to be people that try to cover up the unpleasant, which are mainly the government, armies and the news. In The Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd F. Bitzer argues that what makes a situation rhetorical is similar to that which constitutes a moral action as he writes that, “an act is moral because it is an act performed in a situation of a certain kind; similarly, a work is rhetorical because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind”.(3) By defining the rhetorical situation in this way, Bitzer further contends that rhetoric is a means to altering reality. (4) It is through the use of discourse that one is capable of changing reality through thought and action. (4) Bitzer then elaborates upon the nature of a rhetorical situation by explaining that rhetorical discourse enters a situation when: providing a response to its state of affairs; rhetorical discourse is given significant presence by the situation; the situation exists as a necessary condition for rhetorical discourse to have effect; a rhetorical situation or event may mature or decay over time; the rhetorical situation invites the use of discourse to alter its reality; the rhetorical response given to the situation is appropriate; and the situation controls the response of the discourse. While Bitzer notes that these are parameters for a situation to qualify as being rhetorical, he further discusses three constituents that are present in any rhetorical situation prior to the presence and manipulation of discourse. (6) Exigence, audience, and constraints are seen to be necessary elements in a rhetorical situation for Bitzer. Exegince, “is an imperfection marked by urgency; it is a defect, an obstacle, something waiting to be undone, a thing which is other than it should be”. Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
The right of African American is an essential subject for many texts in any historical time period. Malcolm X and Danzy Senna both pick the discrimination of African American as their main point for their essays. In The Mulatto and Millenium, Danzy Senna tells her own stories about how she grows up as a black girl with a Wasp mother and a black-Mexican father. In another hand, From The Ballot or the Bullet is a speech of Malcolm to persuade African American to group together regardless religion to fight for their human right. Although From the Ballot or the Bullet (Malcolm X) and The Mulatto Millennium (Danzy Senna) share the same main idea and some rhetorical devices, each of them has some unique devices that make their essays more interesting and influenced.
The authors of this article are writing as citizens of the St. Louis area. They observe that the current dealing of the issues of race, equality, and education is not currently being effectively dealt with in the city of St. Louis and beyond. They give us very clear views on their opinion when they stated “Because education is where opportunity starts, St. Louis should immediately show its serious by starting to turn around inequalities in public education” (St. Louis Dispatch, 2014.
However, “The Coddling of the American Mind” is not an informative piece, as it is filled with opinions and methods of emotional persuasion towards the author's belief upon the topic. The rhetorical device pathos is abundant towards the end of the article where the author is dependent on negative connotations and emotionally captivating statements in order to convey the idea that students should be aware of the potential to be offended and accepting of it as a part of life. Lukianoff and Haidt's negative vocabulary can be seen through words such as “Blaming” and “catastrophizing”; these words are synonymous with overreacting or the inability to accept and negatively impact the opposing side's argument about student anxiety. Negative connotative vocabulary alongside statements directed towards the reader's emotions such as, “In June, a professor protecting himself with a pseudonym wrote an essay for Vox describing how gingerly he now has to teach. “I’m a Liberal Professor, and My Liberal Students Terrify Me,” the headline
“Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” is an article written by world famous cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. In this article, Yo-Yo Ma identifies and discusses the role of arts in the world, stressing the point that these arts are a necessary element in the education system. Ma believes that the skills learned from these arts, are in fact, “essential” to the kind of balanced thinking that is needed in today’s world. Throughout this article, Yo-Yo Ma brilliantly portrays his thoughts, and gains the support of his audience through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, while also maintaining a clear and concise stance.

Many artists use rhetorical devices in their work to help convey a message and to make their audience feel something. Ed Sheeran is a singer-songwriter who uses many rhetorical strategies to craft his songs. As a person, and a lyricist, Sheeran is very likable and popular because he always stays genuine and true to himself. He is truthful and real in every song, and what he writes is his way of dealing with any personal struggles; struggles most people can relate to. Specifically, in his song “Thinking Out Loud” Sheeran uses rhetoric to prove his love is true and will be lasting forever. He appeals strongly to ethos and pathos, and employs devices in order to invoke similar feelings of experiences in his young adult listeners.
