In order for an article to be considered reliable and credible, it needs to follow a certain criteria. This includes having rhetorical appeals and devices such as logos, ethos, and pathos. The article must also include direct quotes from reliable sources to be considered plausible. Two articles, “Time to Assert American Values” and “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs Up a Fierce Debate About Crime and Punishment” both tell about the caning of Michael Fey in singapore. Only one article is considered reliable to me.

The author starts off by explaining the case and the publicity it got in the United States. In this writing, mostly logical evidence is used because the author uses many pieces of outside evidence or sitations from other sources. An example of this is when Reyes states, “It wasn’t long before Singapore patriarch Lee Kuan Yew weighed in. He reckoned the whole affair revealed America’s moral decay. ‘The U.S. government, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. media took the opportunity’” (182). The author also uses ethos appeal when it is mentioned that, “the accused is struck several times on the buttocks with a long rattan cane. Amnesty International has declared this punishment “torture” (Reyes 182). This quote is an example of ethos because it appeals to ethics by describing caning as “torture”. This editorial seemed like a credible source because it used many direct quotes and evidence when mentioning other sources. For example, the author explains, “If there is a single fundamental difference between the Western and Asian worldview, it is the dichotomy between individual freedom and collective welfare,” said Singapore businessman and former journalist Ho Kwon Ping in an address to lawyers on May 5, the day Fay was caned. “” (Reyes 182).
