In both my English 101 and 102 classes I built off of so many knew writing techniques since high school. Knowing how much you love English, I wanted to update you on all the new techniques I learned, since high school English. One of them being rhetorical analysis. I know we kind of went over it in English, but I did not use it as much, as I did for my college papers. With this technique, I believe that in the future this will be assist me in my upcoming college papers. For a reminder, rhetorical analysis is analyzing what rhetorical strategies are being used in a paper. In the paper, one would search for the message, the purpose, and ethos. My Unit 2 was researching academic journals and analyzing the techniques that they used in order to support their claim. But I had to find articles that were pro and con stances for the topic. For my Unit 2 essay, I had laid out a clear plan on how I was going to describe my topic. My topic was African American College dropout rates and I believe it is because of the price of college tuition. After I explained the issue, in my following paragraphs I started with the articles the were “pro” African American struggles to pay for college tuition because of financial struggle. Within this field, I would have to make statements and arguments for different cases or for public issues. Additionally, I would have to use rhetorical analysis to understand concepts and reasons from writer’s articles and journals. Rhetorical analysis would help me since I understand how to use it, I could apply it to the controversial essays that I would have to write in my field. For example, I know that politicians have to understand their counterparts position and explain why they are either for it and against it. The first assignment would be to analyze someone’s stance on a known situation. I know that I would start off the paper by making my argument and that would be my thesis. After that I will set up evidence that is for my position and then I will set up evidence that is against my position. At the end, I will use both evidence to help support the claim that I made in the thesis. In order to revise this paper, I would have to start by making sure my thesis is clear and makes sense. Secondly, I would have to check to see if my evidence is relevant to the topic and that my analysis is well thought out and explains the purpose of the evidence. Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.

Authors use rhetorical strategies to express themes in their writing. Different rhetorical strategies help convey different themes with varying degrees of effectiveness. One way to measure the effectiveness is to rhetorical analyze two pieces of writing to each other and see which is best.
Director Steven Spielberg and auther Markus Zusak, in their intriguing production, movie Saving Private Ryan and book The Book Thief, both taking place during World War II. However , in Saving Private Ryan Spielberg focus on a lot of complications that occur during war , but guilt was one difficulty that stood out to me. Zusak, on the other hand , showas that having courage during war can be a advantage and also an disadvantage depending on the situation. Both director and author grabed the audience attention with emotional and logical appeal.

Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. Every day we perform some type of analysis rather we are aware of this or not. When we’re watching television, meeting someone for the first time, choosing something to wear etc. Learning to apply analysis to rhetoric situations is a valuable skill. As a college student this knowledge will assist me in writing persuasive argument essays and discussion post. It will allow me to make informed decision prior to buying products and give me a better insight on political debates as a citizen.

I was able to find several resources that helped me understand how to begin writing an analysis. One of the resources that I used came from our textbook “The Little Seagull” (pages 49-53). They were able to describe the key elements in a rhetorical analysis, how to analyze the argument, and how to organize your thoughts for mapping out the analysis paper. This was helpful for me to know how to generate ideas and organize my paper but I still didn’t have my “a-ha” moment. So I dug deeper and went online to view some rhetorical analysis essays to see the set up and how they should sound to help persuade my audience. The most helpful resource that I found was a video on You Tube where Shaun Roundy was explaining the fundamentals of writing a rhetorical analysis. This is where the light bulb finally came on for me and I was able to understand that how I had been writing my analysis paper was all wrong. I was summarizing instead of critiquing the author’s persuasiveness of the argument. Shaun Roundy was able to give the big picture of what instructor’s look for in a rhetorical analysis and start from the bottom by giving the definition of rhetorical analysis and building our foundation of learning by helping me to understand how to apply it. I viewed this video many times, even while I was in the middle of writing to make sure that I had a clear understanding of what my paper should include. I was able to improve my paper by making sure I stated my claim and supported my opinion. I had to make sure I had enough evidence from the article that showed the purpose of the article, the directed audience, and if the author showed either logos, pathos, or ethos. The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Introduction Teachers have become gateway keepers to providing education to students. Over the span of several years, teachers have been criticized for being unprepared, unable to adapt to different learning styles, and are increasing the number of students who aren’t learning. With this achievement gap increasing, it brings up the idea of what the education system is doing wrong and what improvements it needs to make. The education system needs to be redesigned to strengthen its curriculum, it’s connection to both practice and theory, and the idea of a powerful educator. As a second semester freshman, I found English 102 to be one of my favorite classes. My professor Sally Benson, structured our class’s curriculum around issues in the prison system. More specifically juveniles in adult prisons, college classes for incarcerated individuals, and prison privatization. I found this quite interesting because every assignment we did directly correlated to these three issues. In the beginning of the semester, we, as a class, analyzed all three of these issues, to get a become well acquainted with each topic. In 1729, Jonathan Swift published a pamphlet called “A Modest Proposal”. It is a satirical piece that described a radical and humorous proposal to a very serious problem. The problem Swift was attacking was the poverty and state of destitution that Ireland was in at the time. Swift wanted to bring attention to the seriousness of the problem and does so by satirically proposing to eat the babies of poor families in order to rid Ireland of poverty. Clearly, this proposal is not to be taken seriously, but merely to prompt others to work to better the state of the nation. Swift hoped to reach not only the people of Ireland who he was calling to action, but the British, who were oppressing the poor. He writes with contempt for those who are oppressing the Irish and also dissatisfaction with the people in Ireland themselves to be oppressed.
