The Revolutionary War The Revolutionary war also known as the American Revolution and the U. S. War of Independence began in April of 1775. It began over a conflict between Great Britain and 13 North American Colonies. For ten years’ tension between the colonist and British authorities were building. The British wanted to raise money by taxing the colonies. The ways they tried to do this was by The Stamp Act of 1765, The Town Shend Tariffs of 1767, and the Tea Act of 1773. Protest started with the colonist because they were not represented in parliament and they felt like they should have the same rights as other British. Resistance of the colonist led to violence in 1770 when British soldiers fired on a mob of colonists killing five men. …show more content…

A group of people such as George Washington, John Adams, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry and John Jay met in Philadelphia to come up with a plan against the British crown. The First Colonial Congress did not ask for independence from Britain, but they were able to stop taxation without representation. They did not want the British armies there. The congress wanted citizens to have rights such as life, liberty, property and assembly of trial by jury. They voted to meet again in May, but a lot of violence had already broken out. Local Militia men and British soldiers clashed firing the first shots on April 19, 1775. When the congress met again they added new members which included Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. They called this the Second Continental Congress. They voted to form and army and put George Washington was the Commander in Chief. The first battle started on June 17th and was known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. The British won this battle. George Washington’s troops kept the British contained in Boston throughout the fall and winter. In June of 1776, the war was in full swing. As you just read the Americans came out on top in 1783. The signing of the Treaty of Paris ended the war. The Treaty of Paris was the setting of boundaries of the United States. The boundaries were the Mississippi River to the west, Great Lakes in the north and 31st parallel in the south. It also guaranteed American fishing boat access to the Newfoundland. This war lasted 7 years. The Americans were not favored to win the war. The British seemed unbeatable. In the previous years the British enjoyed many victories after victories. The British had the best military in the world. There military was disciplined and paid well and also feed good. The Navy dominated the sea. The funds were well raised by the Empire. Some were used to hire people to help the British to fight the Americans. This war can be summed up as a civil war fought on foreign soil. This was a war that we could not have won without the French’s help. The British had a big disadvantage because their troops and supplies were so far away and had to be shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. British also had a disadvantage of time when they would receive orders from London, they were about two months out of date. America had the advantage of local
