The Historical Legacy of Residential Schools Residential schools opened up in 1857-1996, solely for the purpose of absorbing Aboriginals into Christianity and the English culture because their beliefs and cultures were seen as negligible. Former residential school students are called “survivors.” The results of these residential schools cause direct as well as long term effects towards Aboriginals. The survivors are not the only ones affected. Relatives, children and friends of the survivors are affected as well. The historical legacies of residential schools include loss of identity, culture/ religion, destruction of families, and high suicide rates/ mental disorders. To start off, Aboriginals who attended residential schools suffer a loss of identity and their native culture/ religion. Firstly, they are forced to speak or in some cases learn English and if they are caught speaking their native language they are punished by having needles stabbed into their tongues. Because they fear to speak their native languages, they lose a big part of their culture. Secondly, they are forced into Christianity. They have to pray, sing and follow the rules of Christianity. It is forbidden to practice their native beliefs thus leading to a loss of religion. Lastly, they are “dehumanized.” Meaning every student is forced to wear the exact same uniform, have the same haircuts and are numbered off instead of being named. When someone is dehumanized, it takes away his or her individuality, turning him or her into a whole new person. Dehumanization results in loss of identity as well as culture because it erases their past and molds them into something they are not. So, because they’re forced to speak English, practice Christianity and are dehumani... ... middle of paper ... ...ssed and they feel like when they get drunk or high it helps them to forget and drown their sorrows. Lastly, natives who attend residential schools often experience having trouble-expressing emotions. They do feel but they don’t show emotions, sometimes it’s a choice where they prefer to build a wall between their emotions. This can be caused by being emotionally scarred. Recapping this point, residential schools are a cause of suicides, substance abuse and mental disorders amongst many aboriginals. In conclusion, the legacies of residential schools are all negative; aboriginals lost their identity and cultures, experienced break downs within their families and many took their own lives/ abused their way of living. The idea of residential schools might have been beneficial to the English but the aboriginals had no choice but to suffer yet gain nothing out of it.
