Date: March 5, 2017 To: Ashley Thomas, Dental Hygienist From: Amani Romney Subject: Proposal for hygiene treatment plan Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to acquire information for a report, and plan strategies that help the patient acquire and maintain oral health. Summary The significance of this proposal is to promote and make oral hygiene a priority of all individuals. Eighty-five percent of oral hygiene affects whether a person will develop bone loss or tooth decay; the fifteen percent that also impacts dental hygiene are things that are not avoidable such as chemo-therapy and injuries. With a plan in place for oral health the percentage of avoidable dental issue decreases by leaps and bounds. During an exam the minor problem …show more content…
of flossing can be addressed as a lesson, this minor tutorial can be planned to show the pluses of flossing after each meal and how to do it properly, slowing down tooth decay. The individuals with gum disease from unhealthy habits over an extended time can be shown how smoking, not flossing or cleaning their teeth has impacted the gums. Once the habits have been address the goal would be to fix the problem and keep the individual on track to avoid bone loss and possible tooth loss because of being uneducated. Introduction The execution of the hygiene plan is to help patients recognize their mistakes, and help set up a plan that is easy to follow.
Most patients that come into the dentist are coming for a reoccurring problem. Each time they leave there not aware of what is causing them to have the same issues. A part of the dental hygienists job is to catch what is being done wrong and to fix it with the treatment plan. The treatment plan is set up for you to follow so that you don’t continue to do the same things and risk your health. It helps keep the patient on a routine and educate them on the importance of oral health. The treatment plan is based on a series of questions to make it a specific treatment plan custom to the patient’s needs. Specifically, these are the main questions asked to get insight on how people’s oral health can be …show more content…
evaluated: 1. How often do you floss your teeth per day? 2. How long does it take to brush your teeth? 3. When was your most recent oral or mouth cancer exam? 4. When do you normally brush your teeth? It’s important that you understand the correct way to take care of your oral health. In a recent questionnaire that I conducted I found that 7/10 people have never have flossed their teeth. This is significantly a problem because people run a higher risk of having tooth decay, gum disease, and possible tooth loss. Proposed task With Ms. Ashley Thomas’ approval, I would like to help patients form a treatment plan. Task 1. Have an interview with Ms. Ashley Thomas. I used this interview to ask questions about the dental field. I received a lot of information on what is happening as of recently. This interview helped me with my letter of inquiry and my questionnaire. It helped me further my education on dental hygiene. Task 2. Write an inquiry letter Ms. Ashley Thomas This inquiry letter will help me answer some essential questions in this report. The letter of inquiry also a loud I to ask question based off of the interview I had and was able to get am good informative response back. Task 3. Proposed a questionnaire The questionnaire lets me get insight on people’s knowledge of oral hygiene. With the questionnaire I was able to ask random people questions and see what they do on a regular basis. As well as get to know there daily hygiene. The questionnaire helped me get a better prospective on why the treatment plan is effective. Task 4.
Write a proposal This proposal is allowing me to explain and ask for permission to carry on further and make a report. It is a document asking for a permission to expand on all the information I’ve been given and allowing me to put it into a report about my subject. Task 5. Progress Report Progress report helps to keep me on track with the due dates of papers. It is also to lets people know how far along I am on my report that I will be doing. It helps to show the goals that I have accomplished with all my information to help me with the final report. Task 6. Final report With permission from Ms. Ashley Thomas this proposal would allow me to come up with a dental hygiene treatment plan. The hygiene treatment plan would be my final report which is what everything has been building up to. The new information that I have acquired, and questions that have been asked and answered this is going to allow me to come up with my own dental hygiene treatment plan. A dental hygienist is a very important role in any dental office. As stated by a dental assistant, “Dental hygienists work closely with the dentist as well as hands on with the patients. They assist dentists with operative procedures such as fillings and extractions, and making molds of patients teeth” (Wilson, Jennifer). A large part of their job is teaching patients proper dental care to ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth. This includes proper brushing and flossing techniques. According to the job out look, a day as a dental hygienist can include taking x-rays, cleaning and scaling teeth, charting treatment plans, putting sealants on teeth, taking impressions of teeth and completing information about the patient’s oral and medical history (Summary). In some states dental hygienist are allowed to give local anesthetic and place and remove sutures (Delivering Local Anesthetic). According to advantages of becoming a dental hygienist, hygienists spend more hands on time with the patients than the dentist does. These are some of the instruments that dental hygienists use on a daily basis: toothbrush, scaler, mirror, ultrasonic scaler, explorer, suction, computer, salvia ejector, rubber cap polisher, dental models, x-ray machine and probe. The dental hygienist uses a toothbrush to remove soft plaque from the teeth. Plaque is a soft coating on the teeth that contain bacteria. The bacteria can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The amount of plaque on the teeth gives the hygienist an idea of how well the daily brushing and flossing of the patient’s teeth are completed on a regular basis. The scaler is used to remove hardened plaque or calculus from the teeth. The mirror is used to look closely at the surfaces of the teeth a...
Good oral hygiene is an essential part of nursing care and if left undone can lead to larger problems such as increased risk for pneumonia, tooth loss, mucosal lesions, and increased complications of comorbidities (Delgado, 2016). There needs to be a revision to the current oral care policy because oral hygiene is not being performed on the residents. This policy will benefit the patients and the facility. Patients will benefit from better oral hygiene thus reducing the risk of overall infection. The facility will benefit by saving money related unnecessary spending on items such as antibiotics and intravenous (IV) supplies.
Is there anything else you would like to share with me about the head, neck and oral exam in relation to comprehensive, individualized patient
A hygienist then asks what polisher flavor the patient would like. What the polisher does is remove any fragments of plaque remaining and surface stains on the teeth. A hygienist will then go over how to properly floss teeth for future references. Flossing is the only way to remove plaque in between the teeth. The hand scalers and polishing can only do so much. Most patients believe that flossing isn’t a big deal and make excuses such as “I forget to do it” or “I don’t know how.” This is what a hygienist is for; to properly educate the patient how to take care of the mouth by teaching them how to floss if necessary and prevent serious
They then should look over the charts at the patient’s situation with their teeth and see what medical treatment they need. They then bring the patient in and perform the treatment. Lastly, they charge the patient for the certain treatments, like the cleaning, and then for say a filling, they will charge them separately, and then the patient will leave. Soon after, they will start all over again. Furthermore, there are a lot of skills required to be a Dental Hygienist, but yet simple ones.
In the Dental Hygiene field, many challenges come about every day and during different situations. Every day there are new challenges and unusual situations that occur in the dental field, but one challenge that continues to come about and has been a big dispute over the years is the ability to provide beneficial information about oral health care for the underprivileged. For the individuals that are not fortunate enough to pay to have services done in the dental office, lack the knowledge of how important good oral health care is. They do not receive the one on one conversations explaining the significance of taking care of your teeth and gums that the patients who can afford to make appointments and receive essential services do. That
A healthy mouth not only facilitates nutrition of the physical body, but it also develops confidence and sensation of health. Oral conditions effect the general health and disease. Oral hygiene prevents bad breathe, gum diseases and tooth decay. Dentists can diagnose and treat oral affliction at the initial level. This help adults and children to maintain excellent dental health during their lifetime.
Hygienist are the dentists who educate their patients on the importance of oral health care. Hygienist examine any chipped tooth, damage filling, discolored or swollen gums, and also take x-rays, and help prevent tooth decay. Today, dental care focuses on prevention. Preventing tooth decay and related problems is the main job of a dental hygienist. As generations pass, not many people are fully aware of the downside of not properly taking care of their pearly whites. This topic was brought to my attention by noticing the lack of dental hygiene among my peers. This doesn’t necessarily just mean having only cavities, sore gums, but also bad breath.
As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.
When you are a dental hygienist you must be understanding and patient with someone with bad history of dentistry. Hygienist should make the patient feel comfortable and safe. I will always be uderstanding and patient with all patients. I will treat my patients with care and compassion, by listening and resolving problems the patient my have.A dental hygienist must also be passionate about oral health and educating others about it. They must be their patients role model. Another great trait of a detan hygienist is having a positive attitude. Being positive can give off an energetic and friendly feeling that can help the patient to relax and enjoy their visit at the dentist. As a hygienist, one must be detail-orientated. Especially, since the most of the occupation is in one general area, the oral cavity. It is with great need for dental hygienist watch closely at every thing they encounter while doing routine check ups on the patient. Informing the Dentist about anything out of the normal could be critical, like sensitivity. Catching little unnormal things, like dark or weak spots, earlier could keep that patient from severe
They clean people’s teeth by removing stains, whitening, and other tactics. They remove tartar and plaque from mouths, and they have to practice proper techniques for a routine cleaning. In most cases, dental hygienists are constantly using machines to view the mouth from different perspectives. They must know how to operate each machine, and they have to know how to read them. From these tests, they look for problems and causes to those problems. Once this is completed, they created a dental care plan. These can range from referrals to other doctors, additional appointments, or simply dental hygiene techniques or demonstrations
Over time as individuals age and are faced with access to care issues they may begin to neglect their oral health. As time passes between dental hygiene cleanings or dentist visits the presence of oral disease may begin to increase.

Pursuing a career in the dental public health field was a decision influenced by many factors starting by my passion for research. One of the main reasons for applying for my dental public health residency at Columbia University is the fact that it has a great research program, which is ranked among the top research facilities in the world. Columbia university’s dental public health residency department possess ample opportunities for research for those motivated to take advantage enough to r...
Maintaining oral health is extremely important not only for your mouth, but for your overall health (Wallace, Taylor, Wallace & Cockrell, 2010). Poor oral health impacts a person’s quality of life and general health, It causes pain which could result in poor nutrition (Griffin, Jones, Brunson, Griffin & Bailey, 2012). The residents at Menarock aged care have a private dentist from Alpha dental that visits the facility when prompted, although some resident’s families take them to their own family dental professional.
