Lost Colony of Roanoke When most people think of the early settlement they think of the first successful settlement, Jamestown, Virginia , but this was not the first settlement in the New World. The settlement at Roanoke, Virginia was the first attempt to colonize the New World. The settlement at Roanoke is often referred to as the “Lost Colony” because of its unusual disappearance. The Lost Colony of Roanoke was an interesting part of Americas beginning. It began with John White an English explorer with a wife and two kids. Furthermore, starting a colony with 115 English settlers on an island called Roanoke. Then, White went away for three years to get more supplies; by the time he got back there was nothing...nothing but a word “Croatoan” on a tree. Additionally, White looked for any sign of colonist houses,campfires,or a sign of where they went. The mystery behind the Lost Colony of Roanoke can be summed up into two theories: the colonist left to another island or were killed by local tribes. “Croatoan”is the first though place John White looked for the other colonists “Croatoan is a small island 50 miles south of Roanoke”(Great Mysteries of the Past). Of course, showing the possibility of the settlers moving to that island. John White did look on that island but found nothing of the other colonists (Virginia). The colonist where in rough conditions and having trouble giving the possibility of them moving (Great Mysteries of the Past). Furthermore, giving the colonist more reason to move from Roanoke. The colonist were supposed to say where they moved which is probably the reason they left the word Croatoan (August 18 1590 What Happened). In light of this, if the colonist left Roanoke, “Croatoan” is likely the place they tried to go
