Chapter Five

Stephenie Meyer is my favorite author and the reason I want to be a writer. “To me a story is a story… I don’t even think about where it might belong until long after it’s written,” is a quote from her that inspires me to become a writer. “The most important thing you can do is write for yourself,” is another reason why I write. The most important hobbies to me are reading, writing and singing. I don’t know any famous readers, but my favorite singing artist is Carrie Underwood. She is so unique, unafraid to let people know her Christian faith, and has such a beautiful voice. My favorite writers are Stephenie Meyer and Gayle Forman. They inspired me to become I writer, so that’s what I want to do.

My first hobby is writing. I mostly write at home, but now that I have a creative writing class, I’m writing now and will be for a while. I do it whenever I can and that’s a lot of time. I do it because it makes me feel like I’m the person I’m writing about and that I feel like I’m part of more than I really am in life, that’s also the best

part. I feel like I can really be myself, be a different person with more courage.
My next hobby is reading. I do it almost everywhere; I love it that much. Whenever I can, which is recent, I read. I read constantly when I’m not doing something else. I read before, during, and after school. I do it because it’s easier than dealing with the real world. Reality is way harder than the worlds in a good book, which is why I get so caught up in the book. When I read, I’m not me, I’m the person I read about, either they are a confused girl with no family, or a girl who’s world was turned upside down because one little thing. The best part, other than not being me, is that I really don’t have to do what I’m expected to do; I can be me, figuratively, and not have to be judged. I read about something and it introduces me into something better than reality, into a world where no one knows me. Mostly I lose track of time in reality when I read, it’s like everything around me just disappears or stops. When I read I feel like nothing matters, but the book and myself. I feel real.
My last hobby is singing.

I don’t enjoy it as much as reading, but I do love it to a certain point. When I was little my Nanny would always sing me to sleep—she would sing a song about angels watching over us. As I grew older I was… well fascinated in singing, so I started to sing with her. At church on Sunday mornings and nights I would sing with her and the choir. I would sometimes even sing alone when I was about nine. So it became an all-time thing as I noticed myself singing on my own. It’s special to me because it reminds me of my grandparents on both sides of my family. My grandpa Gurthey, on my mother’s side, sings and plays guitar. My Nanny, on my dad’s side, sings all of the time, so I pretty much have it in my blood to sing. My role model, a famous musical artist, is Carrie Underwood, she has a beautiful voice, is beautiful, and isn’t afraid to tell people about her Religion. I feel like I’m something

bigger.
Considering most people would believe that my hobbies are strange and boring, but to me I’d rather do them than anything else. Reading, writing and singing are a part of me that I’m not ready to give up, and that I hope I’ll never have to give up. My life would be pretty strange if I didn’t have my hobbies, and if they weren’t such a huge part of whom I really am. Besides, who wouldn’t want to be themselves?
