Marjane Satrapi - Director/Author Marjane Satrapi was born in 1969. She grew up in Tehran, studied in Vienna before she relocated to France in 1994. In Paris, through fellow comic book artists, she was introduced into the Atelier des Vosges, an artist studio which gathered major, contemporary comic book artists. In Persepolis, published in October 2001, she described the Iraq-Iran war and her teenage years until she left for Vienna at the age of fourteen. This 2D movie was made in a visual style that reflects a live action movie and aesthetically draws from cinematic techniques. The characters are only but black and white and the backgrounds are all drawn from real locations that have been reproduced in varying shades of grey. Editing also reflects that of a action film, with sections jumping (jump cuts?) between perspectives to communication movement during action scenes.
There is a strong influence of the author, Marjane Satrapis’ favourite German expressionist filmmaker F.W.Murnau (Sunrise 1927) in this animation reflected in the use of shadows and dramatic stylisation.
The movies animation was completed by two studios, “Je suis bien content” and Pumpkin 3D, and was created in a completely traditional way without the use of computer generated images. This was in the main to ensure that lines held definition when enlarged. Over 600 model sheets were required for each character, and this may be a record for an animated movie. Not many people understand what it feels like to feel pain, hurt and abandonment as a child from major and minor things. Personal experiences are expressed through themes including revolution, imperialism, nationalism, religion and loss of innocence and affect Marjane personally as she grows up.
Persepolis is a graphic novel depicting the life of author Marjane Satrapi’s life throughout the Islamic revolution, starting from her childhood. At one point in the story, the Shah of Iran has left the country, and Marjane’s parents think that they will have new freedoms. Later, however, the country is bombed and fundamentalists occupy the United States embassy. After these events, Marjane is ultimately forced to leave the country without her parents to live in Europe. This was foreshadowed in arguably the most significant panel in Persepolis, the 7th panel on page 43. It features Marjane and her parents, sitting in the family’s living room, the news on a television in the background. They are discussing the fact that the Shah recently left Iran to live in Egypt. Around the panel’s frame is a serpent-like creature. In this panel, Marjane Satrapi uses the frame, and contrasting facial expressions and dialogue to show that the Shah is not the only problem in Iran, foreshadowing the unexpected events of unrest that fill the rest of the story.

In the first chapter of “The Complete Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, the author starts off with the Islamic Revolution and the changes it brought to her immediate surroundings. This reminds me of colonialism and the changes it brings to the colonized country. Colonialism started with the expedition of the Portuguese and Spanish to discover new wealth. Since then, the drastic after effects of colonialism are still felt today by the affected group. In the 20th century, colonialism plays a part in why some cultural groups are the way they are today. In conclusion, the change the Islamic Revolution did to Marjane’s immediate surroundings is similar to how colonialism affected the colonized countries.
The novel Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi, portrays a diverse amount of symbolism throughout the novel which contributes to the protagonist developing into a young women. The main character, Marji Satrapi flourishes at an early age in her life due to the setting of the novel. Satrapi acquires knowledge about different insights of the Iranian government which constitutes her self judgement. Satrapi reckons that the individuals that make up the population of Iran should all support the idea of the government before the ministry of Iran can commence a war. “For a revolution to succeed the entire population must support it" (Satrapi 17).

The film Persepolis is an adaption to Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis coming-of-age graphic memoir. It involves a young Muslim girl name Marjane as she comes of age within the environment of the Iranian Revolution. The film explores the actualization of Marjane through allegory to show how she must construct her identity within a foundation of westernization, religion, and gender.
Caramel, Divorce Iranian Style, and Persepolis are three critical films in analyzing struggles a woman has to face in the Middle East for Freedom. My personal favorite is Persepolis. Persepolis is about a strong, independent, and stubborn young woman who never gives up on the search for freedom. Marjane is an inspiration. She teaches the viewer the real struggles that women face in the Middle East. She does not make light of critical issue and she never gives up. For these reasons I find Persepolis to be my favorite film out to the three films we watched in class this semester.

Persepolis, a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, is not a run-of-the-mill comic book. It is written with purpose. Satrapi wrote and illustrated this book to show Americans that their perspective of her home country, Iran, is askew. She believes Americans are too focused on the “fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism” (Satrapi ii), of the nation and that they forget to notice the normality and humanness of it. Since these two perspectives have vast differences, Satrapi wants to change their minds.
