American Beauty I chose American Beauty as one of my evidence’s of learning because it exemplifies all the qualities of a film created with a purpose in mind. The particular purpose that Sam Mendes created this film for was to critique American Culture. Many excellent film techniques were used like the foreshadowing of Mr. Burnham’s death and the use of symbols. The color red is used quite often, but in different ways for the characters. My favorite use of the color red is when Mr. Burnham is “fantasying about Jane’s young friend Angela naked, covered only in rose petals. His sexual desire for her makes him change his exercising habits, which lead to him having a healthier lifestyle.” The film is a parody of the “American dream” to have a white picket fence, a good job, loving family and expensive car. From the outside, life looks perfect but once out dive into the character’s stories, you can tell how broken they truly are. To the average viewer the story makes no sense, but to an honors film student, its easy to see the meaning behind every scene in the film. In my response, I focus on many different qualities of neoclassicism such as the focus on the mundane, use of nonfactors and that the films were set in a culture of poverty. One film technique that I did like was that symbols such as the handkerchief were Easter eggs for film watchers who knew what to look for.
