Twin themes occurred in Roman history known as renovatio imperrii and renovatio Romae that brought about much change and the popes throughout this period of time made sure they were a part of the changes being brought about. During this time we see papal propaganda beginning to take place while the popes such as Julius II, Leo X, Paul III, Sixtus V, and Paul V try to exhibit their power. The Renaissance was very important for Rome, and the renovatio imperrii as well as the renovatio Romae had great affects for the future of Rome, too. The renovatio imperrii was known as the renewal of political and military power. The renovatio Romae’s goal on the other hand, was to try and restore Rome to the splendor and glory is once had under the ancient Romans. This included aspects such as urban renewal like bridges and fortifications. Both of these renovations though had the objective of renewing and reviving Rome, and the five popes listed above all had their own way of contributing to these ideas of renewal. Julius II conquered rebellious towns and cities within his papal states, which showed his authority and granted him his nickname. He created the link between popes and emperors and did so by beginning to collect antiquities. Julius II was also the one who decided St. Peter’s needed to be rebuilt and hired Bramante to do so and had the idea to create the Villa Giulia for pilgrims coming from the south. He hired Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel and Raphael to paint the walls in his Vatican library that included the School of Athens.
