Beginning in 1904, René Lacoste was born in Paris, France. He was a tennis player and businessman. He was nicknamed "the Crocodile" by fans because of his action on the court. From 1925 to 1929, Lacoste won ten grand slam titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and Forest Hills. In 1926, inspired by his nickname, he asked his friend Robert George to design a crocodile, and it made its first appearance embroidered on a blazer of Lacoste's. In 1981 the first Lacoste boutique opened on Avenue Victor Hugo, Paris. Lacoste then came out with a sunglasses line, which were a hit on and off the court. A new fashion designer was appointed in 1986. His name was Guy Poulin. The Lacoste Watch was produced in 1993, and in 1995, the first US boutiques were opened in Palm Beach and Bal Harbor, Florida, followed by New York. In '96 the Lacoste website was created (www.Lacoste.com). In 2002, Christophe Lemaire became the fashion designer of Lacoste.
