The film is based on a true story that took place in Virginia in 1971, in which two schools are integrated into T.C. Williams High School. The school also hires an equally successful coach to replace the previous coach, but many see it as just another form of integration, but many undermine the fact that he’s an excellent coach regardless of his race. As Coach Boone moves into the neighborhood, he faces direct as well as indirect displays racial discrimination. It’s truly unfortunate that seems to have adapted to this kind of ‘lifestyle’. I also found it deeply inspiring due to the fact that it was based on a true story, although it happened only recently, especially in a southern state, considering how far back our country’s history of racism goes back. Remember the Titans shows us that although it’s difficult to create change since it means people will face strong hateful opposition; it’s possible. We may have come far compared to one hundred years ago in terms of fighting against racism, but we still have a long way to go before we can even come remotely close to racial equality. I especially appreciate and commend the movie for touching on issues such as perpetual discrimination of gay guys in sports in that time period plus the fact that there was one character who white player who completely dismissed the issue of race, demonstrating the flaw in generalizing racism to a whole race. The movie also touched on sports opportunities for the disabled, in this case, Bertier being devastated due to being paralyzed from the waist down due to a car accident, meaning he couldn’t play for the Titans
