God freed Israelites from slavery in Egypt and lead them to the Mount Sinai by Moses. The movie the Ten Commandments is about Moses life. He is an Egyptian Prince who later finds out he is Hebrew. Throughout the beginning of the movie, the viewers are able to see the contrast of how the Egyptians lived versus the Hebrews. Once Moses finds out he is a Hebrew, he goes off to be with them. The Hebrew people believe Moses is the chosen one and they follow Moses in order to find freedom from the Egyptians. Moses does exactly that and leads the Hebrews away from the Egyptians to their own land. While they are their Moses presents his people with the Ten Commandments given to him by God on Mount Sinai.

This is a very overlooked aspect of this commandment. The TV and entertainment can distract me from my work (school, chores) and thus I do not complete my work as this commandment commands. The TV and other entertainment also tempt me to not want to work but to be entertained all day. TV and entertainment tempt me to lay idle and enjoy leisure when work is to be done during the week. So the TV entices me to break this commandment by distracting me and my mind during the Sabbath day when my thoughts should be directed toward God, and by promoting slothfulness.

Judaism vs. Christianity Judaism and Christianity developed on the basis obeying God, on adherence to his rules and intentions and their faithful fulfillment. Since the fulfillment of God’s will is a duty of a Jewish or Christian person, both religions fall into the rule-deontological category. In Judaism, God is seen as having a contractual relationship with the Jewish people where they must obey his holy laws in return for their status of the chosen people. God rewards or punishes Jewish people based on whether they obey or disobey his will. In parts of the Old Testament, however, God does show mercy or forgiveness, and in later interpretations God’s laws such as the Ten Commandments are followed not only out of loyalty to God but also because of their high moral character.
Theologian Karl Rahner begins his short essay, “On Work,” by first clarifying the type of work he is referring to. By ‘work,’ Rahner means the ‘9-5 normal and routine job,’ career, living, and/or means of obtaining the necessities for biological life. From scriptural times to the 20th century when Rahner explored this topic to this modern day, jobs in the workforce have changed substantially. Whether toiling on the fields or trading in a high-class bank, the message within the Scripture and Rahner’s essay applies uniformly; work is a condition one must live with, and it signifies the fall of mankind.
