The 1950s: A Resurgence of Faith Cecil DeMille’s 1956 film depicting the book of Exodus, The Ten Commandments, reflects upon historical and political American events of the 1950s, such as the Cold War, in regards to the fear of Communism, and the Civil Rights Movement. DeMille introduces the concept of either being a subject of the state or having freewill under God in the prologue of the film, and the ideals of racial equality echo throughout the movie. But, another overarching theme of the film is DeMille’s emphasis of American religious values of the 1950s. The movie resonates with both DeMille’s faith and the other religious tendencies of the 1950s. This included making connections with the other members of your church through not only worship, but other secular activities. This concept is familiar to me, and probably many others who belong to a place of worship in the 21st century. For example, my church has Wednesday night dinners, service work trips, youth group events, and Christmas fairs. These are all events that stress the beauty of community within one’s religion. DeMille emphasizes religious activity and community through the infinite faith of the Israelites. But in the 1950s this new concept was criticized as a ploy for the state to gain the faithful, in order to use religion as a weapon against communism. And well-known people, in Hollywood and on Capitol Hill were quick to promote the value of faith. For example, President Eisenhower made statements urging Americans to “return to God” (100). It was suggested that this new commitment to one’s faith had little to do with spirituality and more to do with opposing the USSR atheists. J. Edgar Hoover comfortably stated, “since Communists are anti-God, encourage your child to be active in church” (99). But DeMille seemed to have more spiritual
