Does Rap and Reggae Music Have Negative or Positive Influences On the Youths Today
Rap and reggae music, is this a problem or a solution to the growing pains of today’s youth. Rap and reggae music were born from similar ethnic origins. African Americans and Afro-Jamaicans who are poor, a minority, experiences similar struggles, poverty, oppression, the desire for expression and a path to create enjoyment. Rap and reggae artists have been influential in the lives of our youth conveying both positive and negative messages. Many people believe that there are only negative connotations associated with these genres of music. Researchers believe that nonstop exposure to acts of violence, sexual degradation of women, messages of sexual stereotypes, and displays of acts of abuse of drugs and alcohol in music videos will influence the conduct and outlooks of the very vulnerable young viewers. Since it has been determined how powerfully rap and reggae music can be to even elementary school age children, educators, parents and adults entrusted with molding young minds can use rap and reggae music as a learning tool. The use of rhythmic beats and appealing lyrics has been found to produce positive results in learning. Teenagers' selection of rap and reggae music and their responses to and understandings of its meaning fluctuates with age, values, and culture. Studies have revealed that music is interpreted differently between young males and young females. There is a greater chance young women may use music to mirror their sensitive mood for example when feeling sad, depressed or feelings of deep affection while young men will use music to motivate and increase heights of vigor or to generate greater, confident appearance of
