As a first year student, college is an excellent opportunity to discover one’s own sense of identity and interact with a diverse range of people. Unfortunately, everyone will experience moments of confusion, loneliness, or even disengagement during their college years, which may cause a lack of interest for campus involvement. Through many studies, there are several theories that determine the parallelism between a student’s growth and their involvement interest, which also provides helpful methods for first year students to overcome challenges during this time. Whenever they feel discouraged or overwhelmed, I can motivate them to stay engaged by reminding them of the reasons they become involved in the beginning. Because interruptions are a major problem for me, I will let others and my mentees know in advanced that I am engaged in other activities, and that I will contact them when I am available to communicate. This will be helpful for me, so that I will become more engaged in conversations instead of worrying about other duties. In addition to this, I will strive to not overschedule myself to the point that I will not have any time to acknowledge others or my mentees. Also, I learned that it is important for me to study with intuitive people in a project in order to obtain a better brainstorming process.
