The Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word professionalism as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person” (Merriam-Webster dictionary; 2017). For some individuals, being a professional may include wearing a certain style of clothes or the ability to perform a job to a certain standard. Some see it as the way we speak to one another or how we act in a tough or troubling situation. I believe all of these qualities tie into the definition of the word. I believe professionalism is an abundance of qualities wrapped into one word. Professionalism does not only include degrees earned and titles of authority one my have, but the respect, organization, patience, attitude and accountability that the individual is capable of. This paper I am writing will be driven towards professionalism in a work place and school setting; along with respect towards authoritative figures. Digging into my personal background, I grew up on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to learning about life and how people should be treated. My mother is more vocally loving and nurturing while my father is more “if you’re going to be dumb, you better be tough”. I owe many of my accomplishments to the things they’ve taught me throughout the years. One thing that has always stuck with me is the respect for people. I believe in someone earning respect rather than just giving it out freely to them. This goes for any setting, including the workplace and school.
