The LGBT community has been silence for so many years in which society has looked at this population with a very negative view. Thankfully we are accepting this community with open arms but, it is still considered taboo too many others. Understanding the LGBT community can be a positive outcome to the members because we all need to get along and learn to accept one another. The individual that I will be interviewing is a women that is 42 years old and was married to a man for 15 years she has two children with her ex-husband. I will be asking her a couple of questions regarding her sexuality and her transition to lesbianism.

Yes we all have known that this population has been around for so many years, but as a Mexican and being the only daughter it was hard for my friend to admit she was a lesbian when she was younger. She feels grateful for President Obama because he is the person that has welcomed this community to society, even though some individuals cannot accept the fact that the LGBT Community is here to stay my friend is happy for who she has become. A lot of anti LGBT religious people preach about being homosexual is a sin and that is a subjected that she gets irritated about, no one is perfected in this world. Being a lesbian does not make my friend any different when it comes to believing in God. As a lesbian and with kids no one has the right to judge her but only God. My friend goes to Abundant Living Faith Christian Church, she only attends that church for the reason being that she feels welcome by that church. She attends service with her wife and her kids, not even once she has felt and awkward stare or she has never felt people talking down to them because they are a lesbian

For my interview portion of this response I interviewed a friend of mine named Nicole who is a bisexual. When I asked her about her fears of coming out her she said that her only fear was being seen as some kind of pervert or sexual predator.” I came out to my friends first, some were shocked but soon it just became something that people just knew and after awhile it became just as relevant as my hair color”. She also stated that after she came out to her friends some of those friends came out to her soon after. She admitted she was treated differently by people because of the discrimination bisexuals get by both hetrosexuals and homosexuals.“People tolerate bisexuals but they are not respected” She said that many people treated her as if she was confused or like she was only pretending to like girls because they believe that would attract men. She explained that most people tend to believe that bisexuality doesn’t exist.
Her mother couldn't accept her sexuality. Her other, friends at school, people in town force the opinion of "it’s bad to be a lesbian" to everyone who dresses differently, or acts toward the same sex differently. Nobody should be forced to follow a strict tradition. Sexuality is wrongly exposed to children, and at the end of the day, they'll be crying on the floor in shame like Alike. Sexuality isn't talked about in the right way.
For years homosexuality in the United States of America has been looked down upon by citizens, religions, and even politicians. The homosexual culture, or the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), has been demoralized and stuck out and lashed against by the Heterosexual community time and time again. To better understand the LGBT community we must first grasp the concept of Sexual Orientation.
As a society we see everyone as straight person and if you are not then others do not accept you. Last week, Arizona state legislature passed a bill permitting business owners to refuse service to homosexual customers if it conflicts with the owner’s religious beliefs. Researchers argue that homosexuality is based on genetics while religious persona believe homosexuality is unorthodox. I will be discussing research about the impact of homosexuality on the family and how people believe that when homosexuality is innate it increases LGBT rights. Also, how homosexuality can lead to at risk sexual behavior for men and prone to HIV’s.
When two people are in love and plan on having a family, they look to the future and look at all the wonderful events to come. Yet, they do not think of any negative outcome that may lie in the future. No one likes to think that something different or unexpected can happen to his or her family, but rather image and focus on the great future that is yet to come. However, It seems that people are encountering more conflict with their gender identity and not only the individual but the families as well. I chose the topic of transgenderism. Transgender is when an individual tries to switch genders. Transgender comes from the Latin words trans, meaning “across.” Transgender literally means “across gender.” Many trans-individuals decided later on in their lives that they want to switch genders, and other people argue that they were born the wrong gender. Trans-people experience many difficulties throughout their lives. Switching genders makes their lives more challenging, because of many reasons. Their lives are more challenging because of their religion, whether or not they are accepted. The military is very strict, and will not accept trans individuals whatsoever. Insurance companies sometimes will not accept them as well. Trans people are not always accepted by certain occupations. Growing up in schools, trans people are all treated differently regarding to which bathroom/locker room to use. There is a huge debate whether or not trans students are even allowed to participate on sports teams, and if they are, which team to be on. Other obstacles such as birth certificates, passports, and driver’s licenses are all major issues as well. "A lot of people see gender as very one-sided, girl or boy, but in reality, even the choices of one, the other, both, or neither just don't feel right.” Many people don’t realize that there are more gender identities than just “male” and “female.” In June 2016, The Williams Institute at UCLA estimated that about 1.4 million US adult’s genders don't align with the one they were assigned at birth. One can identify as the opposite gender from their assigned sex, as no gender, as both, or as a unique identity not so easily categorized.
There are many issues that interfere with the health and happiness of those within the Gay and Lesbian community. The National Association Position Statement on Gays and Lesbians is as attempt to abolish such issues within the social work practice. One place that individuals of any sexual orientation practice should feel safe is with those who have chosen the field of social work as a means to helping the oppressed. Social workers must be aware of their own personal beliefs and values when it comes to the fear of and the misrepresentation of working with this divers group. The consequences of not dealing with such issues and may have a latent manifest in dealing with the Gay and Lesbian population, and if not addressed prior to working in this field, maybe devastating to a client.
When I think of the LGBTQ community I will say that the one that I have the least understanding of is the transgender community. I have researched and watched videos but they only got me so far with the answered I seek. I needed to be able to have face to face conversation with someone to help me. Having Mae come talk to us was an answer to a prayer. She answered so many of the questions that I had and gave me insight that I would have never had if not for having the chance to talk to her.
Over the past 20 years, I have read the Bible through, in its entirety, and I am unaware of any scripture that supports a LGBTQ lifestyle. However, the Bible certainly contains scripture that are against homosexuality. Now, I was a practicing fundamentalist Christian for most of my life and I read every single word of Scripture with the belief that a literal reading was right and necessary in order to understand God’s word. And, honestly, I was unaware of the term historical-critical reading until today when I read our required articles.
Society has shaped the thoughts and minds of many individuals and because of this personal beliefs towards LGBT people came into play. Society was constantly telling people that there was something wrong with them if they were LGBT and that they would go to hell for it because God did not approve of it and it was a sin. I would like to say that because society was judging people and denying them, that they were committing a sin. It is not their place to decide the fate of certain people, the only person that can make those decisions is God. God is the one that decides whether we are deemed worthy to go to Heaven or not. The treatment of the LGBT community in American Society is a social injustice. What most people think is that they just want to be able to marry one another and be happy but that’s not it. They want to be treated like humans and not some weird creatures that no one has ever seen before. They want to be accepted for who them are and not what people want them to be and they deserve the right to be who they are just the same as any other human being. After all the discrimination they have endured they should be allowed to be who they are and be accepted as equals just like people of different skin color did in the times of segregation. We have a long way to go as a country but being the greatest country in the world in the eyes of many great America will make big steps to make things fair.
If you were to ask me what exactly sparked my passion for LGBT rights, I wouldn’t be able to give a straight answer (pun not intended). I did (and still do) not identify personally to any of the terms LGBT stands for, nor did any of my close family members or friends at the time identify as such. Now a few do, but that’s hardly the only reason I’m still passionate about it.
