Growing up in a predominantly, rural area in Cecil County, Maryland. I naturally made friends with people who come from a different culture from my own. However, I find myself in a constant battle between two cultures, the culture of my parents and the society in which I have been brought up in. My friends have given me a taste of being and individual, and my parents have given me a culture that stresses collectivism. From a cultural standpoint, I identify myself as a Hindu- American. When I was growing up, there were two messages that always made me think about my gender. Growing up I often noticed that my male cousins were treated with more respect by the elders in my family. We live in a patriarchy where social order sustains gender inequality in society, but feminism is a counterargument against gender inequality. I identify myself as a feminist all women should be considered equal to their male counterparts. After viewing the “Women Against Feminism” Tumbler, I noticed that the Anti-Feminist like order in patriarchal society and did not need feminism because they were not the “victim”. The anti-feminist believed that there was no difference between a patriarchy, or matriarchy because one gender would always surpass the other. After viewing the “Everyday Feminism”, I was really impressed with the different articles that I came across. My favorite article was “What to Do When Your Child Believes Gender Bias”, I like this article because it spreads awareness that children pick up gender biases at a very young age. I love the fact the author encourages t parents embrace children for who they are, and to talk about gender biases with their children. For example, a young girl may want to wear a batman tee-shirt with boy jeans, instead labeling her as “boy” adults should encourage the girl to be who she wants to be (Friedrichs, 2015). Overall, I really liked looking through this website it helped me a view feminism on a broader spectrum.
