Reflective Essay: From My Migration To The Dominican Republic

We didn’t speak the same language, but I knew they were thankful for such simple labor. Two years ago, I went to a church convention located in the Dominican Republic. For several days, my grandfather and I volunteered; my grandfather worked in different ways than I. There were only a handful of Americans there, and just as many Dominicans who spoke English. I was assigned to record worship and sermons, so all that I had to do was simply move the camera to follow the pastor. Through this I realized even something as simple as recording and burning DVDs could spread God’s good news to people throughout the small country. I didn’t go home from this trip thinking, “I should be grateful for everything God has blessed me with”, but rather, I went home with a calling from God. Although I was not able to communicate with most of the people at this convention, I still felt drawn to them. I knew something as simple as recording, digging up some dirt, or building could help more people than I realize. Helping people means so much more than just words alone, and it speaks to people when words can’t. Some of these hobbies are woodworking, carpentry, and general building. Recently, I’ve felt my calling from God is to serve in Central America. It’s still not sure to me whether I will be building houses or something else, but I know whatever it is, God will use me to serve. Recording an event and burning it onto CDs can lead people to God and building a home could completely change a person’s life. These acts of love display God and His contagious love.
