This reflection paper is about the climate change based on articles in the Global issues book. The articles used in this reflection paper are “Climate Change” by Bill McKibben and “The Other Climate Changers” by Jessica Seddon Wallack and Veerabhadran Ramanathan. This paper will explore McKibbens ideas on if scientists are divided, the effects of climate change and how climate change can happen. This paper will also explore Wallack and Ramanathan’s thesis of black carbon and the ozone, pollutants and how to clean up the emissions. Both of the author’s perspectives on this issue are well informed and backed up with credible sources. They both explain the need to reduce our greenhouse emissions and create a global commitment that will slow down the climate change and help create a sustainable planet. In 1988, the United Nations formed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It was created to assess climate change and present the world with a scientific view on the current state of climate control and the environmental and economic impacts of climate change. There are 195 countries that are a part of this organization and thousands of scientists are involved with the work. The collection of scientists allows the IPCC to have an opportunity to present balanced and rigorous scientific information to decision makers. According to the IPCC, reports have concluded that the warming climate is dangerous and is caused by human activity. According to McKibben, the Arctic Ocean has seen a significant amount of melting. By September 2007, there was less ice in the arctic than ever measured before. This was the start of a serious issue that has continued, in 2008, so much ice melted in the Arctic that it has allowed the Northwest and N... ... middle of paper ... ...on information from scientists to support their information. It is persuasive because they use examples that people can associate with and understand. The Climate Changer focuses more on carbon dioxide while The Other Climate Changer focuses on black carbon. They both understand the importance of federal funding to promote reducing emissions and green technology and realize that it needs to be a global initiative and not something that one country can do on their own. The world needs to be educated on the impact of over using our resources and we need to stand and work together to reach a sustainable planet. We need to use all of the possible resources to slow down the climate change, and improve technology so that we can quickly lower the level of greenhouse gases and offset the impact of the industrial era has caused. This is critical to sustaining this planet.
