Recommended: What are the stylistic features of ballet

As you walk into the grand hall that is the main stage of the J. Scheidegger Center of the Arts and take your seat in the red plush seats the mood is set for the master pieces to come. The opening act provided energy that would have to carry you throughout the rest of the night. Overall a majority of the pieces took your breath away and captivated your being. The composure and professionalism of each eight count they graced the stage. In the piece O Mio Babbino Caro performed by Taylor Plodzien, Taylor performed a meticulous pointe configuration to an instrumental melody. She displayed an outstanding understanding of proper technique from her leaps with pointed not sickled feet, with her knees turned out and chest lifted, to her spotting and proper releve to plie during her pirouettes. This technique made following the story of longing for her father pleasurable. Her flowing motions and simple movements such as reaching towards the ebsis that is stage right created an emotional connection between the audience and the dance. The music selection, I previously mentioned, of instrumental woodwinds helped convey the feeling of longing when you heard the long strokes of the bow across the strings. The only thing that i would have change would be the second number, Pass the Ducks, it just personally didn’t speak to me in any way and it seemed like it was a last minute addition to the set list. The girls were great in the piece don’t get me wrong, it just wasn 't one of my favorites. The three pieces that I would one- hundred percent watch over again would have to be Betwixt, Unity and The Moment I Said It. Those made me feel emotions of longing, anxiety, sadness, and compassion. They were able to speak to my soul in ways the other dances just were not able to at the time. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized. There were a few times when the performers exited at the wrong times or it seemed so due to the echo of the music. At certain moments the music was slightly loud and drowned the performers. Many of the songs dragged on, so the pacing could have been more effectively executed. Though the music was off at times, the director's decision to have most of the songs performed center sage was a wise one. Also the implementation of actual white characters that were competent in their roles came as a great surprise to the audience and heightened the realism.

    I enjoyed this concert. It was my first real experience with jazz music. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect, but I left satisfied that I attended. However, there was one thing I did not enjoy. The narrator between songs was not very effective and actually took away somewhat from the concert. He failed numerous times at trying to be humorous and rambled on. My favorite piece was 88 Basie Street. It gave me that easy and relaxed feeling. This piece started softer, and then seemed to pick up with more energy. With my lack of knowledge of Jazz music, I certainly enjoyed this piece the best. I learned how exciting and fun listening to jazz being played live can actually be. I found it very interesting. Like I said earlier, the only thing I would change to make the concert more effective would be to have the narrator speak less.
