Teaching and Learning

Underpinning my teaching philosophy is the notion that I, as a teacher, will need to connect with my students on a personal level before creating rich learning experiences for them to engage in. I believe that every student is unique as they all have their own knowledge, skills and interests that they bring into the classroom. I feel that it is my responsibility to continuously nurture and challenge them. In saying that, it is also important to provide opportunities for them to learn new things and make new discoveries about themselves and the world around them.

I will create and implement quality assessments that cater to the differing needs of the students within my care. Assessment for learning will enable me to gain an insight into students knowledge, skills and understandings, which in turn will inform my future planning. This process involves teachers, students and their parents reflecting upon and responding to the evidence.

Assessment as learning involves students taking responsibility for their own learning. Both formal and informal assessment activities will be embedded into the learning process and students will be encouraged to use self assessment and peer assessment as part of regular classroom routines. Assessment of learning involves assessing students achievements against the outcomes and standards. I believe that it is essential for families and schools to work together in partnership. These partnerships require commitment and time and are based on mutual responsibility, respect and trust. Crucial to building, maintaining and renewing partnerships is leadership. As a teacher I will take the initiative to encourage and involve families within their child’s learning as we all work together towards a common goal.

Families and communities will be encouraged to play an active role in the classroom and school. They can do this by volunteering at school events, sharing their area of expertise with the students and establishing programs to support and enhance students learning experiences. I believe that these experiences will be valuable for the community, families and the students. Telephone calls, newsletters, email, class web sites and handwritten notes will be utilised to maintain communication with parents.
